The texts were written in Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol, between 1874 and April 1879 and until 1888, respectively. In this work, Eça de Queiroz reveals his true colors as a political analyst and essayist, presenting his critical and analytical view of English life and drawing comparisons between the campaigns waged by the English in the region. This copy is in very good condition, with the pages still unopened.

First edition of this work by Eça de Queiroz, written between 1877 and 1878 and remaining unpublished for more than a century. A novel left in an unfinished state by the author, it develops the tragic relationship between Vítor and Genoveva and anticipates themes and situations that Eça would later revisit in «Os Maias», making it an important document for the study of the development of his fiction.

The text was established and annotated by João Medina and A. Campos Matos, with an extensive preface by João Medina discussing the history of the manuscript and the editorial criteria adopted. The first publication of one of Eça de Queiroz's most significant previously unpublished works.
