Year 1798/99
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Officina de Simão Thaddeo Ferreira and na Typographia Regia Silviana; In-folio of 2 volumes with 484 and 416, 62 pages; Illustrated; Bound.

First edition of one of the fundamental works of Portuguese historical lexicography, written by the Franciscan scholar Fr. Joaquim de Santa Rosa de Viterbo (1744–1822). This important dictionary collects and explains archaic Portuguese words, expressions and terms, many of which had fallen out of common usage, drawing upon medieval and early modern documents to clarify their meanings and historical contexts. Particularly valuable for interpreting historical records, it remains an essential reference for philology, diplomatics, and the institutional, legal and social history of Portugal. The first volume covers the letters A–F, while the second covers G–Z and includes a 62-page supplement. Illustrated with engravings in the text and five full-page plates. Dedicated to Prince Regent João and referenced by Inocêncio Francisco da Silva in the Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez, volume IV, pages 152–153.

Copy comprising both volumes bound together in a single volume, in a sturdy full-leather binding decorated with blind-tooled borders on the boards and gilt tooling on the spine. The text block is exceptionally clean, with the paper retaining its characteristic crispness. Bears an ownership bookplate.

THEATRUM D. N. JESU CHRISTI ATROCIORUM CRUCIATUUM C. LECTORI SPECTATORI PROPOSITUM

Carolus Stengel
REF.36848
Year 1658

[Augsburg, probably Andreas Aperger]; In-4.º of (8), 153(11) pages; Illustrated with engravings; Bound.

Rare seventeenth-century religious and devotional work by the German Benedictine Carolus Stengel (1581–1663), Abbot of Anhausen, devoted to the contemplation of the sufferings of Jesus Christ. The work belongs to the tradition of Catholic Baroque spirituality, in which meditation upon the Passion served as a means of moral instruction, religious reflection and spiritual devotion.

Presented as a theatrum of Christ's most severe sufferings, the work invites the reader to become a spectator of the Passion. This approach reflects the importance of visualisation and emotional meditation in Baroque spirituality, seeking to inspire compassion and reflection upon Christ's redemptive sacrifice. An interesting example of the relationship between devotional literature and religious imagery in the seventeenth century.

The edition is illustrated with an allegorical copper-engraved frontispiece, a copper-engraved portrait of Joachim von Gravenegg, Abbot of Fulda, and ten full-page copper engravings, two of which are attributed to the engraver Georg Andreas Wolfgang. It also includes a woodcut illustration within the text.

Copy in contemporary full leather binding, showing slight signs of handling and traces of woodworm damage to the spine. Clean contents in good overall condition.

LES ŒUVRES DE MONSIEUR DE CRÉBILLON
LES ŒUVRES DE MONSIEUR DE CRÉBILLON

Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon
REF.36847
Year 1749

Paris; Chez Nyon, Fils, Quai des Augustins, à l'Occasion; In-12.º of 3 volumes; Bound.

Eighteenth-century edition of the dramatic works of Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon (1674–1762), known as Crébillon the Elder, one of the leading French tragic playwrights of the first half of the eighteenth century. An heir to the classical tradition of Corneille and Racine, he distinguished himself through intensely dramatic works exploring conflicts of power, violent passions, revenge and moral dilemmas. His best-known tragedies include Idoménée, Atrée et Thyeste, Électre, Rhadamiste et Zénobie and Pyrrhus.

Published in Paris in 1749, this three-volume edition reflects the contemporary reception of Crébillon's theatre during the author's lifetime. His dramatic writing, frequently associated with the taste for terror and pathos, occupies an important place in the development of eighteenth-century French tragedy, representing one of the most characteristic expressions of French tragic theatre before Voltaire's emergence as a dominant literary figure.

Copies in contemporary bindings showing slight signs of handling, with the contents in good condition. They bear ownership bookplates.

METHODO DE MANEJAR A LANÇA OU PIQUE

REF.36851
Year 1809
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Officina de Antonio Rodrigues Galhardo, Impressor do Conselho de Guerra; In-4.º of 12 pages and 6 plates; Illustrated; Softcover.

Rare Portuguese military instruction manual published in 1809, during the Napoleonic invasions and the reorganisation of Portugal's military forces. Dedicated to the handling of the lance or pike, it presents instructions concerning the positions, movements and techniques required for the effective use of these polearms, particularly relevant in the context of the mobilisation of military forces and volunteer corps during the Peninsular War. An interesting example of early nineteenth-century Portuguese military literature, documenting training methods and combat practices during a particularly turbulent period in the country's history.

The work is recorded by Inocêncio Francisco da Silva in the «Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez», volume XVII, page 34, entry 3542, with a collation of 12 pages and 7 plates. However, the «Catálogo da Colecção Varnhagen da Biblioteca do Itamaraty» describes a copy of the same edition comprising 12 pages and 6 plates, corresponding to the collation of the present copy. We consider the reference to seven plates in the «Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez» to be a bibliographical error, since the collation of gatherings and leaves in this copy is complete and does not allow for an additional plate. This observation helps clarify the discrepancy between the two bibliographical references.

Copy protected by an old decorated paper wrapper, with minor signs of handling along the margins. The final page bears old manuscript annotations.

Coimbra; Nicolao Carvalho; In-8º of (8) 48 leaves; Bound

Unpublished edition of this "Rule of the Glorious Patriarch St. Benedict". It constitutes one of the most significant milestones in the editorial and religious history of Portugal. The project was fully financed by the Congregation of St. Benedict of Portugal, and its re-edition and coordination were under the direct responsibility of the Reverend Father Friar Tomás do Socorro, who served as General of the Congregation in the kingdom. This volume represented the second printing of the rule in national territory, arising with the purpose of updating and replacing previous editorial efforts, such as the well-known version by Friar Plácido Villalobos dated 1586. The text meticulously regulates the daily life of the monks, covering everything from the distribution of food and the rigor of clothing to the criteria of authority and the process of electing the Abbot. Copy with recent cloth binding, interior with the first 10 pages excessively trimmed on the right margin, the rest with good margins. Illustrated with an engraving placed before the title page which we believe is not part of the work. Owner's signature on the title page.

Tomás Ramon
REF.34732
Year 1635

Zaragoza; Diego Dormer; In-8th of (24) 390 (10) pages; Bound

Very rare first edition of this important and esteemed book, one of the most interesting works we have for the study of morals, customs and practices of the 17th century, with special mention of the rules of dress and the use of ornaments and other luxuries. To develop this work, the author relies on texts from doctors of the Church and regulations issued by the Crown (Philip IV, Pragmatics of 1623). Since the Modern Age, the Crown has been issuing pragmatic measures aimed at controlling luxury in clothing. The Dominican Tomás Ramón imagined a society in which the individuals that formed it were differentiated by the clothing with which they covered their bodies. The first chapter is devoted to the abuse of oils, the second to excessive female hairstyles, the third to the footwear that should be worn, the fourth to women, the fifth to clothing, the sixth to widows, the seventh to all states, the eighth to horses and carriages, the ninth to cultured language, and the tenth and last to the abuse of tobacco and the regulation of its consumption. Illustrated with the coat of arms of Zaragoza engraved in woodcut. Copy with full leather binding, core with occasional old restorations, in good general condition. It has ownership signatures on the title page.

Brussels; s/l; In-8º of (10)328 pages; Bound

"...with the Most Serene Maria Sophia Izabel de Babiera, Monarchs of Portugal. The grandeurs are recounted, the entries are narrated. The festivities that will be celebrated in the distinguished City and Court of Lisbon, from August 11 to October 25, 1687, are referred to. The Descriptions. Dedicated to Sir Jeronimo Nunes da Costa." RARE FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this narrative in verse that describes the festivities - including illuminations, triumphal arches, bonfires and bullfights - celebrated in Lisbon on the occasion of the wedding of D. Pedro II (1648-1706) with Maria Sofia Isabel (1666-1699), daughter of Philip William of Neuburg, Count Palatine. In the prologue, the author observes that the royal nuptials can best be described by a poem rather than by a prose narrative: "I know well that the excellences of these Nuptial Regions Praises, were more Subject for the eloquence of a Poem, than Matter for the limitations of a Report." The 92 branches present extensive poetic descriptions of Maria Sofia's arrival in Lisbon, of a day of bullfighting (pp. 159–252), of a fireworks display (pp. 253–290) and of a second day of bullfighting (pp. 291–328). Each section of the poem is preceded by a few italicized lines explaining the upcoming "scene", often giving details of the actors, scenery, costumes and gold and silver ornaments. For example: "In the midst of this siege, a beautiful fortress stood with four superb bastions and eight impressive sentry boxes, crowned by an imminent castle; many giant sailors armed with lances and rodellas could be seen around the waters, from which violent fires were hidden" (p. 260). The charming title page incorporates the combined arms of D. Pedro II and his wife, surmounted by a large crown. From the crown extend a dragon and a large bird holding crowns over the women who flank their arms. On the left, "Galiope" (sic, for Calliope, muse of epic poetry) is crowned with a globe and a cross bearing the name of Mary, and holds a trumpet in her right hand. On the right is Talia (Talia, muse of comedy), crowned with a globe bearing the name of Pedro, and holding a stringed instrument. Above the arms and the muses, two putti hold three banners with part of the title. The end of the author's prologue explains the use of these two figures: "In the severity of Reays, the Epithalamios do not lose their festive condition; in this one that I present to you, I adorn the serious one with the finery of the joyful one; valhome of the heroic one of CALIOPE, without despising the pleasant one of TALIA: with the Clarion of that one, I specify the greatness; with the Plectrum of this one, I solemnize the festivities" D. Pedro II of Portugal (1648-1706) was the second surviving son of D. João IV. From 1668 onwards, she was regent for her elder brother, D. Afonso VI, who was mentally disabled, whom she exiled to the Azores and later to Sintra, where Afonso died in 1683. Afonso's marriage to Maria Francisca of Savoy had been annulled as it had never been consummated. D. Pedro married his former sister-in-law in 1668, and bore her a daughter, Isabel Luisa Josefa of Portugal, who became heir to the throne. The combination of D. Isabel's poor health and the strict rules of succession to the Portuguese throne led to the cancellation of engagements with royal descendants throughout Europe, which earned her the nickname "the Ever-Bride". When Maria Francisca died in 1683, D. Pedro intended to secure the succession by marrying a woman from a notoriously fertile and well-connected family. He sent Manuel da Silva Teles to Heidelberg to ask for the hand of Maria Sofia, daughter of the Count Palatinate, sister of Leonor Madalena, Leopold's third wife. Copy with contemporary binding in full leather, decorated with gold edges, with slight damage typical of handling. Core with traces of woodpeckers (two or three holes, depending on the pages) maintaining the sonority of the paper.

REF.35869
Year 1683
2ndEdition

Madrid; Bernardo de Villa-Diego Press; In-8º of (40) 432 (32) pages; Illustrated; Bound

This is a classic of emblematic literature from the Spanish Golden Age, written by the Dominican friar Andrés Ferrer de Valdecebro (1620-1680). The work was initially published in Madrid in 1670. The book is a treatise on morality and politics that uses the virtues and natural properties of birds (such as the pelican, the falcon, the parrot, etc.) as examples and allegories to convey teachings on good governance and Christian customs. It is a work that blends the fantastic zoology of the time with morality, forming part of the tradition of emblem books of the Baroque period. It was frequently used as a source of reference for sermons, given its rich symbolism. In later editions, even a chapter on "monstrous birds" was added. This illustrated second edition contains 18 woodcuts depicting the birds studied. As indicated on the title page, this print was added in different parts, such as Book 19, which deals with Monstrous Birds. The beautiful frontispiece, as well as the other engravings, is by Diego de Obragón. It covers numerous birds and their characteristics, including the eagle, the vulture, the heron, the swan, the phoenix, the pelican, the falcon, the parrot, the peacock, the dove, and others. Copy with contemporary binding with slight signs of handling, ownership signature on the flyleaf, clean interior maintaining the sonority of the paper, with a slight marginal stain on the last 40 pages without affecting the reading of the text.

Coimbra; Royal Office of the University; 8vo of (14) 437 (1) pages; Illustrated; Bound

A monumental work by Manuel Gomes de Lima Bezerra, which combines historical research, Enlightenment erudition and a deep interest in the Lima Valley region. Structured in the form of dialogues, the book covers topics as diverse as local history, genealogy, geography, agriculture, commerce, arts and traditions, offering a comprehensive portrait of the economic, social and cultural life of Ribeira do Lima at the end of the 18th century. This first volume includes three prints engraved by F. S. Bruno: the first entitled The Foreigners in the Lima; The second, a View of the street beyond the bridge in the parish of S. Martinho de Arcozello; and the third, Illustrated Portuguese Nobility, presenting coats of arms of noble families from Abarca to Aledo. The last two prints are fold-out, which reinforces the careful and ambitious character of the edition. Copies of this work have become particularly esteemed and rare, with the second volume being much more difficult to find than the first. According to Inocêncio, this rarity is due to the fact that a large number of copies were destroyed or rendered unusable during the French invasion of 1810, a circumstance that contributed to the almost mythical status of the work in the universe of Portuguese regional monographs. We only possess the first volume. Copy with contemporary binding with signs of handling, interior with marginal stain on the first 14 pages without affecting the typographical mark, the rest of the interior in good condition, clean and maintaining the sonority of the paper.

RETRATO DE LOS JESUITAS formado al natural Por los mas Sábios, y mas Ilustres Cathólicos

REF.36069
Year 1768

Madrid; Office of the Widow of Eliseo Sanchez; In-8º of (8) 278 (4) pages; Hardcover

A controversial work, integrated into the vast anti-Jesuit literature that flourished in Europe after the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from several Catholic kingdoms. The book brings together testimonies, criticisms, and judgments of Catholic authors who, according to the compiler, describe "naturally" the character, methods, and influence of the Jesuits. With an openly hostile tone, the work presents the Jesuits as agents of political intrigue, intellectual ambition, and excessive moral power, reflecting the climate of distrust that preceded the suppression of the Order in 1773. A rare and particularly significant edition within the anti-Jesuit literature of the 18th century. Published at a time of enormous political tension — immediately after the expulsions of the Society of Jesus from Portugal (1759), France (1764) and Spain (1767) — this edition emerges as part of the wave of pamphlets that accompanied the fall of the Order, reflecting the climate of hostility that preceded its universal suppression in 1773. Copy with solid contemporary binding with slight signs of handling, interior with traces of woodworm on the first twenty pages without affecting the reading of the text, clean interior and maintaining the sonority of the paper.

"Published after the Ordinances, also including some previous ones, which are being observed: ordered by judge Manoel Fernandes Thomaz, acting as provider of Coimbra". 1stEdition

Rio de Janeiro; Imprensa Nacional; In-4º of VIII 39(1) 28 9 (1) pages; Paperback

Extensive political memoir published by Joaquim José de Azevedo himself, Viscount of Rio Seco, in which the author seeks to defend and clarify his public actions between 1807 and 1821, a period marked by profound political upheavals in the Luso-Brazilian world. The work covers the period from when D. João VI entrusted him with the preparations for the court's departure to Rio de Janeiro in November 1807, until his dismissal from all positions of financial responsibility in September 1821. Throughout the text, the Viscount presents documents, accounts, and justifications that seek to demonstrate the legitimacy of his administrative and political decisions, responding to criticisms and suspicions that fell upon his administration. This is a testimony of great historical value, revealing the inner workings of the Joannine administration, the tensions between Portugal and Brazil, and the difficulties of governance during a period of transition, offering a detailed view of the public life of one of the central figures of the Luso-Brazilian bureaucracy at the beginning of the 19th century. Francisco Velasco de Gouveia
REF.36033
Year 1652
1stEdition

Lisbon; Craasbeekiana Printing House; In-4º of (26) 390 (54) pages; Hardcover

Unusual first edition of this work of great political importance, written in defense of the House of Braganza and King John IV, and in firm opposition to Castilian claims to the Portuguese throne. The book pays special attention to the dramatic episode of the imprisonment, in Germany, of Infante Duarte of Braganza, the monarch's brother. Emperor Ferdinand III — also a Habsburg and ally of the deposed Philip III of Portugal, his cousin — ordered the Infante's arrest in 1641. Despite persistent Portuguese diplomatic efforts, prolonged over several years, Duarte never regained his freedom. He would eventually die, ungratefully and alone, in Milan Castle, after eight years of captivity. It features a beautiful engraved frontispiece, with the central portrait, and a cover printed in two colors. The text is printed in two columns. Complete copy, including the prized frontispiece with the king's portrait. Contemporary binding with handling damage and traces of woodworm along the spine. The text block has a stain on the last two dozen pages, the interior is clean and retains the paper's original sound. Small marginal traces of woodworm.

"...ET AUTRES ANCIENS MONUMENS. Depuis la Naissance de Notre-Seigneur, par le Moyen d´une table chronologique."

Paris; G. Desprez; Folio of XXVII(1) 934 (2) pages; Bound

A monumental work of historical scholarship, originally compiled by the Benedictines of the Congregation of Saint-Maur. Conceived as a vast working tool for historians, chronologists, and scholars of ancient documents, the book gathers and organizes a huge amount of dates, events, genealogies, diplomas, chronicles, and documentary references since the birth of Christ. Its main function is to allow the rigorous verification of the chronology of historical facts and the authentication of documents, offering tables, critical notes, and comparisons between different chronicle traditions. Over the centuries, the work has undergone multiple editions and expansions, becoming one of the pillars of modern historical criticism. From the 18th century onwards, several scholars continued and updated the original work, adding new volumes and extending the chronological coverage to more recent periods. Later editions, such as those by François Clément and those continued by Courcelles, maintained the meticulous spirit of the work, reinforcing its role as an indispensable reference for the study of European history and for the analysis of medieval and modern sources. Copy with contemporary binding with slight handling damage, clean interior in good condition, maintaining the sound of the paper.

Lisbon; At the Academy Printing House; In-8º of (4) VIII 446 pages; Bound

Rare first Portuguese edition, and among the first printed versions of the famous travels of Ibn Battuta — or Ben-Batuta — the great Arab traveler born in Tangier in 1304. Over about four decades, Ibn Battuta traveled an impressive distance, estimated at about 120,000 kilometers, becoming one of the most extraordinary figures in the travel literature of the Islamic world. His adventure began with a pilgrimage to Mecca, but quickly turned into a long exploration that took him through vast regions: Egypt, Syria, territories of the former Byzantine Empire, Tartary, Persia, India and China. He also visited Andalusia, later returning to North Africa. In 1354 he settled in Fez, where he spent his last years dictating the account of his travels to the royal secretary Ibn Juzayy. For a long time, only small excerpts of his work were known, based on a manuscript preserved in the library of Gotha. Only in 1829 did Samuel Lee publish a more extensive translation, using three existing summaries in Cambridge. The first truly complete edition would only appear in 1853, thanks to several manuscripts discovered during the French occupation of Algeria. This edition, in French, was prepared by Charles Defrémery and Beniamino Sanguinetti. According to the Portuguese translator, José de Santo António Moura, the manuscript that served as the basis for his version was acquired in Fez in 1797. This manuscript of his “was copied from another written by Mohammed, Ben Mohammed, Ben Ahamad, Ben Jazi, Alcalbi, Granatense, contemporary and friend of Ibn Battuta, his copyist being the author of the preamble”. bib: Inocêncio, 4, 241; Encyclopedia of Exploration, p. 97 (B47). This work was published in two volumes, of which we only possess the first. The second one would be published in 1855. Copy with kraft paper protection, in good general condition.
