Jaime Cortesão  ; Pedro Calmón
REF.35589
Year 1956
1stEdition

Barcelona; Salvat Editores, S. A.; In-8º of XI(1), 734 pages; illustrated; Bound

A reference work written by two of the most prominent historians of the Luso-Brazilian tradition: Jaime Cortesão and Pedro Calmon. Divided into two major sections, the first, entitled "From the Beginnings to 1799," is authored by Jaime Cortesão and addresses the formation of Brazil from pre-Cabral times to the end of the colonial period. With his refined literary style and profound historical rigor, Cortesão explores indigenous origins, Portuguese colonization, territorial expansion, and the first movements toward autonomy. The second section, "From 1800 to Our Days," written by Pedro Calmon, covers the independence process, the imperial period, the proclamation of the Republic, and major political and social events up to the mid-20th century. Calmon, with his humanistic and legal perspective, highlights the central figures in Brazilian history and the challenges faced in building the nation-state. The edition is enriched with 428 engravings and two plates, making it not only a work of valuable historical content but also an editorial example of high-quality graphics. This publication places Brazil within the context of the American continent, offering a comprehensive and illustrated interpretation of its history, focusing on national identity and the country's role in Latin American history. This copy is solidly bound in half-English and is in good overall condition.

"... which is on the way, made by Gaspar Barreiros, the year of the beginning of the city of Badajoz in Castile, in the province of Milam in Italy, with some other works, whose catalog goes scripto with the names of the said places , in the following sheet: Printed in Coimbra by Ioã Aluarez, printer of Vniuersidade, and by order of Dr. Lopo de Barros, from the discharge of our lord, and a congo in the Se d`Euora. paper."
Diplomatic reproduction of the first edition of the 16th century, a rare work of exceptional value, in which the author reports his vigem by land from Badajoz to Milan, with detailed descriptions of the cities and places where he passed.
The natural author of Viseu, where he was Canon of the Cathedral and after the Cathedral of Évora, was nephew of the great historian João de Barros. In 1546 he was chosen to take to Rome the thanks for elevating to the cardinalate of the Infante D. Henrique.
Modern geographers, such as Amorim Girão, consider this book a book in which the correctness of the observation of nature and of geographical accidents denounce a superior spirit largely prepared for such studies.
Reproduction of a very rare and valuable sixteenth-century edition which provides scholars with a wealth of information on Southern Europe in the early sixteenth century.
