Joseph François Lafitau
REF.36095
Year 1786

Lisbon; At the Office of Antonio Gomes; In-8º of 4 volumes with XXXII 374, 446, 467(1) and 487(1) pages; Bound

This is one of the most significant eighteenth-century works dedicated to Portuguese overseas expansion. This edition corresponds to the first Portuguese translation, attributed by Inocêncio to Manuel de Sousa, of the work originally printed in French in 1733 under the title Histoire des découvertes et conquestes des Portugais dans le Nouveau Monde, by Joseph François Lafitau. Father Lafitau (1681–1746), a French Jesuit, missionary and renowned ethnologist, was a figure of great intellectual prestige in his time. His writings are distinguished by their pioneering attention to indigenous cultures and by the articulation between history, anthropology and religion, which gives the work a particular value within the historiography of the discoveries. A bibliographic piece of great interest. Copies with contemporary bindings, with traces of woodworm inside the covers, without affecting the text block. The text block is clean and retains the original sound of the paper.

The Book of Seamanship, traditionally associated with Gaspar Moreira, is a nautical manuscript from the late 16th century, probably produced after 1595, as it incorporates the solar tables published by João Baptista Lavanha that year. REF.21179
Year 1961/63
Lisbon; Graphic Workshops of Neogravura, Lda .; In-4th of 4 volumes; Brooch

“The commemorations of the 5th Centenary of the Death of Infante D. Henrique were exceptionally important, exceeding all forecasts and constituting, without a doubt, a singular event in the fastidiousness of national life. The report, as if it were a presence through the ages of most commemorative ceremonies, held in all quarters of the Portuguese Land, both in the Metropolis and overseas, and in many foreign countries, would be lost in the dispersion and transience of the journalistic news, collecting to the archives, if a work like the one that at this moment does not appear in the light of publicity was edited. Without it, anyone wishing, in the future, to assess the magnitude and significance of the aforementioned celebrations would be obliged to make an exhaustive effort, of uncertain success, in libraries and archives, as, indeed, the experience of analogous events demonstrates. Therefore, the Executive Committee of the Henriquin Commemorations decided to organize this summary history of the events that took place during the centenary year, certain that, thus, future historians or simply curious people will see their work very easily (...) D. João de Castro
REF.35894
Year 1988

Lisbon; Inapa Editions; In-folio of12(40) page; Illustrated; Bound

This work reproduces the famous codex 33 from the General Library of the University of Coimbra. It is a collection of 16th-century maps and drawings associated with the works of D. João de Castro, governor of Portuguese India, documenting maritime routes and hydrographic observations made in the 16th century. The edition includes twenty-nine original plates, designed to illustrate the routes from Goa to Diu and the Red Sea, showing coasts, ports and bays in great detail. With an introduction by Luís de Albuquerque, a specialist in nautical history and cartography, the volume is presented in a luxury album format, with color reproductions and careful binding, thus preserving a rare documentary heritage. This work is considered a fundamental testimony to Portuguese maritime expansion, revealing how nautical and geographical knowledge of the time was recorded and transmitted, and constitutes a piece of great historical, scientific and artistic value. Copy in good condition, retaining its protective case.
