REF.36895
Year 1979

Póvoa de Varzim; Museu Municipal de Etnografia e História da Póvoa de Varzim; In-8.º of 88(12) pages; Illustrated; Paperback.

Catalogue of a documentary and bibliographical exhibition devoted to the traditional marks of Póvoa de Varzim, organised by João Francisco Marques and Manuel Ferreira Lopes, representing an important contribution to Portuguese maritime ethnography. The exhibition sought to document and promote one of the most distinctive features of the town's fishing culture: the graphic symbols traditionally used by fishing families as identifying marks, passed down through successive generations. The initiative also paid tribute to António dos Santos Graça, a pioneer in the systematic study of these expressions of popular culture. The work brings together historical and bibliographical material concerning the origins, use and significance of these symbols, and includes black-and-white photographic illustrations on separate plates. An offprint from volume XIX of the «Boletim Cultural Póvoa de Varzim». A valuable reference for the study of ethnography, traditional symbolism and the history of Portuguese maritime communities.

Copy with slight staining on the original paperback covers; text block in good condition.

CATALOGO DA LIVRARIA DE MUSICA D´EL-REY D. JOÃO IV
CATALOGO DA LIVRARIA DE MUSICA D´EL-REY D. JOÃO IV

Joaquim de Vasconcellos
REF.35875
Year 1874
2ndEdition

Porto; Imprensa Portugueza; In-4º of 2 volumes with 525(7) and 368(2) pages; Bound

Originally published in 1649, this work is one of the most important documents in the history of music in Portugal and in European musical bibliography. It is an inventory of the extraordinary musical library assembled by D. João IV (1604-1656), King of Portugal, who was not only a monarch but also a great music lover and patron of music.

The catalog lists thousands of musical works, including theoretical treatises, sacred and secular scores, polyphonic compositions, and collections of plainchant, bringing together Portuguese and foreign authors. Among the names mentioned are central figures of Renaissance and Baroque music, such as Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria, and many others, as well as Portuguese composers of the time.
This second edition, published by Vasconcelos in Porto through the Portuguese Press, is a critical and annotated edition of the original 1649 catalog. His work was fundamental because it recovered and disseminated a very rare document, allowing scholars of Portuguese and European music to access the inventory of the famous musical library of King John IV.
This edition did not simply transcribe the catalog: Vasconcelos added explanatory notes, historical references, and comments on the listed authors and works, making it an indispensable source for the history of music in Portugal. It was thanks to this publication that many researchers were able to learn about the size of the king's musical library, since a large part of the originals were lost in the 1755 earthquake.
Copies with half-French binding, in good general condition.

Henry Cohen
REF.35873
Year 1887
5thEdition

Paris; P. Rouquette Éditeur; In-4º of XXII 755 (10) pages; Bound

A reference work for bibliophiles and scholars of 18th-century French illustrated editions. It is a critical and descriptive catalog that brings together information on hundreds of books adorned with engravings, highlighting rare editions, authors, illustrators, and engravers who marked the editorial production of the time. Henry Cohen, a renowned bibliography expert, organized the guide as a practical tool for collectors and antiquarians, offering detailed descriptions of the works, notes on the quality of the illustrations, data on print runs, and comments on the artistic and bibliographic value of each edition. The book quickly became an indispensable work for those dedicated to collecting illustrated books, as it systematized a field that was previously dispersed and little studied. Beyond its function as a catalog, it reflects the taste for and fascination with illustrated books in the 18th century, a period in which engraving established itself as an essential element of luxury publishing, combining text and image in a refined aesthetic. Today, it continues to be a fundamental source for researchers of book history and graphic art, serving as a starting point for identifying and evaluating illustrated works from that era. This fifth edition has been revised, corrected, and considerably expanded by Le Baron Roger Portalis. In short, it is a bibliographic and critical manual that consolidated the study of French illustrated books of the 18th century, becoming an essential reference for bibliophiles and historians of publishing. Copy with half-French binding signed by René Aussourd, in good general condition.
