EXTRACTOS DOS PROCESSOS PARA FAMILIARES DO SANTO OFÍCIO
EXTRACTOS DOS PROCESSOS PARA FAMILIARES DO SANTO OFÍCIO

Eduardo de Miranda ; Arthur de Tavora
REF.36892
Year 1937
1stEdition

Vila Nova de Famalicão; Grandes Ateliers Gráficos «Minerva»; In-4.º of 765(3) pages; Bound.

An important historical and genealogical reference work devoted to the applications for appointment as familiares (lay associates) of the Portuguese Inquisition. These records are of exceptional value for the study of Portuguese families, since admission to this position required extensive investigations into candidates' ancestry, family connections, reputation and so-called purity of blood.

Eduardo de Miranda and Arthur de Tavora compiled extracts from documents preserved in the Portuguese National Archives at Torre do Tombo, providing information that enables researchers to identify individuals, establish family relationships and investigate geographical origins, marriages and family backgrounds. Beyond its genealogical importance, the work offers valuable evidence concerning Portuguese society under the Ancien Régime, particularly the mechanisms of social distinction and the institutional influence of the Inquisition.

The first and only volume published, representing a particularly useful reference for genealogists, historians and researchers studying the history of the Holy Office.

Pantaleão De Aveiro, Fr.
REF.26404
Year 1927

Coimbra; Imprensa da Universidade; In-8.º of (4), XIX(1), 559(1) pages; Bound.

An important work of Portuguese travel and pilgrimage literature, originally published in Lisbon in 1593, representing one of the most significant Portuguese accounts of the Holy Land during the sixteenth century. Friar Pantaleão de Aveiro, a Franciscan religious, undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1563 and remained in the region for approximately three years. His narrative offers detailed descriptions of the sacred sites of Christian tradition, the towns and landscapes of Palestine, the routes followed by pilgrims and the conditions of travel in the eastern Mediterranean. Beyond its religious dimension, the account contains numerous observations on local customs, Eastern Christian communities, Muslim populations and the cultural and religious diversity of territories then under Ottoman rule.

This carefully prepared re-edition, published in the series «Biblioteca de Escritores Portugueses», Series D, reproduces the text of the first edition, revised and accompanied by a preface by António Baião, historian and former director of the Portuguese National Archives at Torre do Tombo. A work of considerable interest for the history of pilgrimage, Portuguese travel literature and European knowledge of the Near East during the second half of the sixteenth century.
