REF.36852
Year 1891
1stEdition

Lisbon; Imprensa Nacional; In-4.º of 900 pages; Illustrated; Bound.

Extensive historical and scientific study by João Bonança (1836–1924), devoted to the origins of the Iberian Peninsula and particularly the territory of Portugal, from the earliest geological periods to the establishment of Roman rule. Conceived from a broad perspective, the work brings together geology, natural history, archaeology, ethnography and linguistics, reflecting the nineteenth-century ambition to reconstruct the remote past through an interdisciplinary approach.

This first and only published volume, entitled «Constituição da Península Hispânica e suas relações com o mundo desde a nebulosa terrestre até aos princípios da actual era geológica», examines the geological formation of the Iberian Peninsula, its climate, fauna and flora, as well as the earliest traces of human activity. Extensively illustrated with representations of prehistoric animals and plants, archaeological objects, ancient coins, inscriptions and other material of historical and scientific interest. Although originally conceived as a much larger historical undertaking, the work was never continued, leaving this as its sole published volume. An interesting example of Portuguese historical and scientific scholarship of the late nineteenth century.

THEATRUM D. N. JESU CHRISTI ATROCIORUM CRUCIATUUM C. LECTORI SPECTATORI PROPOSITUM

Carolus Stengel
REF.36848
Year 1658

[Augsburg, probably Andreas Aperger]; In-4.º of (8), 153(11) pages; Illustrated with engravings; Bound.

Rare seventeenth-century religious and devotional work by the German Benedictine Carolus Stengel (1581–1663), Abbot of Anhausen, devoted to the contemplation of the sufferings of Jesus Christ. The work belongs to the tradition of Catholic Baroque spirituality, in which meditation upon the Passion served as a means of moral instruction, religious reflection and spiritual devotion.

Presented as a theatrum of Christ's most severe sufferings, the work invites the reader to become a spectator of the Passion. This approach reflects the importance of visualisation and emotional meditation in Baroque spirituality, seeking to inspire compassion and reflection upon Christ's redemptive sacrifice. An interesting example of the relationship between devotional literature and religious imagery in the seventeenth century.

The edition is illustrated with an allegorical copper-engraved frontispiece, a copper-engraved portrait of Joachim von Gravenegg, Abbot of Fulda, and ten full-page copper engravings, two of which are attributed to the engraver Georg Andreas Wolfgang. It also includes a woodcut illustration within the text.

Copy in contemporary full leather binding, showing slight signs of handling and traces of woodworm damage to the spine. Clean contents in good overall condition.

LES ŒUVRES DE MONSIEUR DE CRÉBILLON
LES ŒUVRES DE MONSIEUR DE CRÉBILLON

Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon
REF.36847
Year 1749

Paris; Chez Nyon, Fils, Quai des Augustins, à l'Occasion; In-12.º of 3 volumes; Bound.

Eighteenth-century edition of the dramatic works of Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon (1674–1762), known as Crébillon the Elder, one of the leading French tragic playwrights of the first half of the eighteenth century. An heir to the classical tradition of Corneille and Racine, he distinguished himself through intensely dramatic works exploring conflicts of power, violent passions, revenge and moral dilemmas. His best-known tragedies include Idoménée, Atrée et Thyeste, Électre, Rhadamiste et Zénobie and Pyrrhus.

Published in Paris in 1749, this three-volume edition reflects the contemporary reception of Crébillon's theatre during the author's lifetime. His dramatic writing, frequently associated with the taste for terror and pathos, occupies an important place in the development of eighteenth-century French tragedy, representing one of the most characteristic expressions of French tragic theatre before Voltaire's emergence as a dominant literary figure.

Copies in contemporary bindings showing slight signs of handling, with the contents in good condition. They bear ownership bookplates.

REF.36849
Year 1801
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Regia Officina Typografica; In-4.º of 13(1) pages; Softcover.

Important official Portuguese edition of the Treaty of Badajoz, signed on 6 June 1801, which brought an end to the War of the Oranges between Portugal and Spain during the French Revolutionary Wars. Concluded by the representatives of Prince Regent João and King Charles IV of Spain, the treaty established peace between the two Iberian monarchies under conditions unfavourable to Portugal, including the cession of Olivença to the Spanish Crown and the closure of Portuguese ports to British vessels.

The treaty is a fundamental document for understanding Portuguese foreign policy at the beginning of the nineteenth century and the pressures exerted upon Portugal by Napoleonic France and its Spanish ally, foreshadowing the conflicts that would culminate in the French invasions. The question of sovereignty over Olivença, arising from this agreement, remained one of the most enduring diplomatic disputes between the two countries. This edition is recorded in Special List 341: The Peninsular War, by Richard C. Ramer, pages 77–78, where it is distinguished from another contemporary folio printing. A work of particular interest for the history of Portuguese diplomacy and Iberian relations.

General Dumouriez
REF.36850
Year 1808
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Impressão Regia; In-4.º of 57(1) pages; Softcover.

Rare Portuguese edition of a political work by the French general Charles-François du Périer Dumouriez (1739–1823), a prominent military figure of the French Revolutionary Wars who, after commanding the revolutionary armies and achieving important victories, broke with the National Convention and became an opponent of the French regime. In this work, he addresses the French nation and Europe with a critical assessment of Napoleon Bonaparte, denouncing his political and military ambitions and the dangers of the expansion of Napoleonic power.

Printed in Lisbon in 1808, the year of the French invasion and the Portuguese uprising against the occupation, this edition belongs to the anti-Napoleonic political literature circulated during the Peninsular War. The work is recorded in the Napoleonic bibliography of the Portuguese Army Library, which identifies Luís Caetano Altina de Campos as its Portuguese translator. An interesting historical document concerning political propaganda and the circulation of ideas during a particularly turbulent period in European history.

REF.36851
Year 1809
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Officina de Antonio Rodrigues Galhardo, Impressor do Conselho de Guerra; In-4.º of 12 pages and 6 plates; Illustrated; Softcover.

Rare Portuguese military instruction manual published in 1809, during the Napoleonic invasions and the reorganisation of Portugal's military forces. Dedicated to the handling of the lance or pike, it presents instructions concerning the positions, movements and techniques required for the effective use of these polearms, particularly relevant in the context of the mobilisation of military forces and volunteer corps during the Peninsular War. An interesting example of early nineteenth-century Portuguese military literature, documenting training methods and combat practices during a particularly turbulent period in the country's history.

The work is recorded by Inocêncio Francisco da Silva in the «Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez», volume XVII, page 34, entry 3542, with a collation of 12 pages and 7 plates. However, the «Catálogo da Colecção Varnhagen da Biblioteca do Itamaraty» describes a copy of the same edition comprising 12 pages and 6 plates, corresponding to the collation of the present copy. We consider the reference to seven plates in the «Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez» to be a bibliographical error, since the collation of gatherings and leaves in this copy is complete and does not allow for an additional plate. This observation helps clarify the discrepancy between the two bibliographical references.

Copy protected by an old decorated paper wrapper, with minor signs of handling along the margins. The final page bears old manuscript annotations.

Lisbon; Imprensa de Libanio da Silva; In-4.º of 48 pages; Illustrated; Bound.

First edition of this commemorative work dedicated to Almeida Garrett (1799–1854), published on the centenary of his birth as a tribute organised by Anna de Castro Osorio and Paulino de Oliveira. The volume brings together a selection of Garrett's writings, celebrating the poet, playwright and politician who played a fundamental role in the renewal of Portuguese literature and the establishment of Romanticism in Portugal.

An interesting contribution to Garrett studies and to the history of his literary reception at the end of the nineteenth century. The work includes an allegorical portrait of Garrett and is recorded in the «Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez», volume XVIII, page 82. Its publication was also mentioned in the contemporary illustrated periodical «O Occidente», which highlighted the commemorative purpose behind the selection of texts. An edition of interest for Portuguese literary history and the study of tributes to major figures of national culture.

Coimbra; Imprensa da Universidade; In-8.º of 2 volumes with XXVI, 407(5) and 541(1) pages; Bound.

First edition of this important study of Portuguese military history, published under the auspices of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and devoted to the political and military conflicts of the early nineteenth century. Francisco de Sá Chaves reconstructs the campaigns in which his father, Francisco José de Oliveira Sá Chaves, participated, drawing on family testimony and extensive historical documentation. The work is particularly valuable for the study of the military and political events preceding the Portuguese Liberal Wars.

The first volume, «A Campanha de 1823», examines the events surrounding the Vilafrancada, with particular attention to Trás-os-Montes and the military movements of that year. The second volume covers «A Campanha da Poeira» (1823), the Abrilada (1824) and the period «De Armas Ensarilhadas» (1824–1826). Karl Marx
REF.36070
Year 1912
1stEdition

Lisbon; Published by Typographia de Francisco Luiz Gonçalves; In-8.º of 240 pages; Softcover.

Rare first Portuguese edition of «Capital» by Karl Marx (1818–1883), one of the fundamental works in the history of economic, political and social thought. The work presents a critical analysis of the capitalist system, addressing the production and circulation of commodities, value, labour, capital accumulation and the economic and social relations characteristic of industrial society.

Published in the «Bibliotheca d'Educação Nacional» series, in a translation by Albano de Moraes, this Portuguese edition is based on the French abridgement prepared by Gabriel Deville, responsible for one of the earliest attempts to make Marx's economic thought accessible to a wider readership. It represents an important testimony to the introduction and circulation of Marxist ideas in Portugal, at a time when socialist literature was beginning to reach a broader audience. A complete translation of «Capital» into European Portuguese would only appear after the Revolution of 25 April 1974. An edition of notable rarity and interest for the history of books, the labour movement and Portuguese political thought.

Évora; Minerva Commercial, de José Ferreira Baptista; In-8.º of 236(4) pages; Illustrated; Hardcover.

First edition of this important collection of historical and documentary material on Évora, compiled by António Francisco Barata (1836-1910), a researcher particularly associated with the history and heritage of the city. The work brings together numerous accounts concerning Évora, its institutions, religious and civic buildings, events, personalities, customs and episodes of local life, frequently drawing upon early documents and archival sources. Its documentary value remains recognised, and the book continues to be cited in historical studies of Évora.

Illustrated with 15 plates outside the text, reproducing photographs and other iconographic records of the city and of monuments subsequently altered or lost, further enhancing the historical interest of the work. Some of the documents transcribed by Barata can be identified among the holdings of the Portuguese National Archives of Torre do Tombo.
