An interesting judicial sentence delivered by the Criminal Court of Porto concerning the violent popular disturbances that took place in Arcos de Valdevez in July 1808, during the first French invasion of Portugal. The document describes an uprising provoked by fears of approaching enemy troops, during which local authorities were attacked, prisoners released, symbols of royal authority destroyed and municipal archival records burned. The copy of the sentence bears a clerk's signature dated 6 September 1810 and provides valuable evidence of the tensions between popular resistance, civil disorder and judicial authority during the Peninsular War.

Lisbon; Officina de João Evangelista Garcez; In-4.º of 4 pages; Unbound.

A rare patriotic proclamation issued during the Peninsular War, urging the Portuguese people to resist Napoleon's armies and defend national independence. Recalling the historic victories of Ourique, Aljubarrota, Elvas and Montes Claros, the text presents them as examples of courage and patriotism, while emphasising military discipline and obedience to commanders. It also appeals to the clergy, magistrates, nobility, landowners and merchants to provide moral, financial and material support, and calls upon women to care for the wounded. An interesting example of anti-French propaganda and the mobilisation of different sectors of Portuguese society during the third French invasion.

The decree imposed an extraordinary war contribution of one hundred million francs and ordered the sequestration of property belonging to the Portuguese royal family and the noblemen who accompanied them to Brazil, unless they returned within the prescribed period. The implementing measures established a levy of forty million cruzados, providing significant evidence of the financial exploitation of Portugal during the Napoleonic occupation. ALVARÁ DE CRIAÇÃO DO LUGAR DE INTENDENTE GERAL DA POLÍCIA DA CORTE E DO ESTADO DO BRASIL

REF.36946
Year 1808

Rio de Janeiro; Impressão Régia; In-Folio of 1 leaf; Unbound.

An important royal decree dated 10 May 1808, establishing the office of Intendant General of Police of the Court and the State of Brazil, one of the fundamental measures in the administrative reorganisation of Brazil following the transfer of the Portuguese royal court to Rio de Janeiro. The decree grants the new office the same jurisdiction as its Portuguese counterpart, established in 1760 and further regulated in 1780, and fixes an annual salary of 1,600,000 réis. It also instructs judicial and administrative authorities to enforce its provisions, overriding any conflicting regulations for that purpose.

Of considerable significance for the institutional and policing history of Brazil, the decree introduced a Portuguese administrative model whose responsibilities extended beyond public order to surveillance, security and various aspects of urban administration. The new Intendancy would subsequently be headed by Paulo Fernandes Viana, a central figure in the policing of Rio de Janeiro during the reign of João VI. Printed by the Impressão Régia, established in Rio de Janeiro in 1808, the document belongs to the important series of institutional reforms introduced following the arrival of the Portuguese court. It features a decorative initial with the Portuguese royal arms and the printed name of D. Fernando José de Portugal.

CRIAÇÃO DOS REGIMENTOS DE INFANTARIA E CAVALARIA DOS VOLUNTÁRIOS REAIS DO COMÉRCIO DE LISBOA

REF.36947
Year 1808

Lisbon; Officina de António Rodrigues Galhardo; In-Folio of 6 pages; Unbound.

An important royal printed decree, dated 28 December 1808, concerning the formation of two military regiments, one of Infantry and the other of Cavalry, composed of merchants and traders from Lisbon, under the designation Voluntários Reaes do Commercio (Royal Volunteers of Commerce). The initiative originated with the city's commercial community, whose members proposed to organise and finance these military units themselves, for the garrisoning, policing and defence of the capital. The document expresses royal appreciation for their patriotism and refers to the organisational plan and conditions submitted by D. Miguel Pereira Forjaz, responsible for the War and Navy departments.

Of particular interest to Portuguese military and economic history during the Peninsular War, this document records the mobilisation of Lisbon's merchant community following the first French invasion. The organisation of these regiments illustrates the direct participation of commercial corporations in the defence of the Kingdom and the cooperation between royal authorities and the capital's merchants during a period of considerable political and military instability.

EDITAL DOS INQUISIDORES APOSTÓLICOS DE LISBOA. Convocação dos Familiares do Santo Ofício para a defesa da Pátria

REF.36948
Year 1808

Lisbon; Printed at the Officina de Joaquim Thomaz de Aquino Bulhões; In-Folio of 1 leaf; Printed on one side; Unbound.

An interesting and uncommon proclamation issued by the Lisbon Inquisition on 23 December 1808, summoning all Familiars of the Holy Office residing in Lisbon and its surrounding district to report to the tribunal's secretary, João António Pereira, in order to be registered and organised for the defence of the country. The document instructs those summoned to appear at the Casa do Secreto, in Largo da Anunciada, providing their names, addresses and dates of appointment, so that a register could be compiled and their participation in the defence of the Kingdom organised.

Of particular historical interest, this proclamation was issued shortly after the expulsion of French forces from Lisbon during the Peninsular War. It illustrates the patriotic mobilisation of the Inquisition's own administrative network at a time when the institution, approaching its final abolition in 1821, sought to demonstrate its usefulness to the monarchy and national defence. Bearing the printed names of the inquisitors Manoel Estanisláo Fragoso and António Vello da Costa, it is a remarkable testimony to the involvement of a religious institution in the military and political affairs of the Kingdom.

Alfragide; Galeria Panorama; In-8.º of 122(4) pages; Paperback.

First edition of this play by Natália Correia, published in the «Série Teatro» collection, with a cover designed by Correia de Pinho. Inspired by the Sebastianist myth and the figure of King Sebastian, the work offers a satirical and irreverent interpretation of Portuguese messianism, exploring the manipulation of historical myths, political power and collective illusions.

One of the author's most significant dramatic works, it was banned from circulation by the censorship authorities of the Estado Novo, following a report dated 3 February 1970, which deemed it politically and morally objectionable. The play was not performed until 1977, after the Carnation Revolution, making it an important example of Portuguese literature confronting censorship and authoritarianism.

One of the most important works of medieval Portuguese historiography, Fernão Lopes's «Crónica de D. João I» provides an extensive account of the dynastic crisis of 1383–1385, the resistance to Castilian intervention, the rise of the Master of Avis and the establishment of the new dynasty. Étude sur la culture artistique au Portugal au temps de l'Humanisme

Paris; Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian — Centro Cultural Português; In-4.º of XXI, 355 pages and separate plates; Illustrated; Bound.

An important art-historical study devoted to the illuminations of the «Leitura Nova», the monumental project of reorganising and copying Portuguese royal chancery records, begun during the reign of King Manuel I and continued until the mid-sixteenth century. Sylvie Deswarte examines the decoration of these manuscripts, their iconographic programmes, European artistic influences and the role of illuminators in introducing and developing Renaissance artistic forms in Portugal. The study explores the relationship between artistic production, humanist culture and the representation of royal authority during the reigns of Manuel I and João III.

Written in French, with a preface by André Chastel and an introductory text by José V. de Pina Martins, the work forms volume VIII of the «Cultura Medieval e Moderna» series, published by the Portuguese Cultural Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Extensively illustrated with reproductions of manuscript illuminations, decorative motifs and details, including colour plates. With a substantial bibliography, it remains an important reference for the study of Portuguese Renaissance manuscript illumination.
