Episodio da Guerra Civil A MARIA DA FONTE
Episodio da Guerra Civil A MARIA DA FONTE

Miguel J. T. Mascarenhas
REF.35594
Year 1873

Porto; Typographia Lusitana; In-8º of 302 (2) pages; Hardcover

A Portuguese Tale is a 19th-century historical novel. The work immerses the reader in the turbulent context of the popular revolt known as Maria da Fonte, which broke out in 1846 against fiscal measures and administrative reforms imposed by the Costa Cabral government, especially those affecting religious customs and rural life. The book combines fictional narrative with real events, portraying popular characters and political figures involved in the insurrection. With an engaging and detailed style, Mascarenhas constructs a plot marked by intrigue, drama, and social critique, revealing the impact of the civil war on the lives of Portuguese communities. The symbolic protagonist, Maria da Fonte, represents the spirit of resistance of the people of Minho, especially the women, who played an active role in the revolt. Beyond its literary value, the work is a testament to the collective memory of one of the most significant episodes in 19th-century Portuguese political history. The narrative offers a unique perspective on the conflicts between central power and rural populations, and on the role of women as agents of social transformation. This copy has a modest binding with signs of use, and the core is in good condition.

"Illustrated with the portraits of the most illustrious patriots of that time and enlarged with magnificent paintings depicting the most remarkable historical facts described in the work composed and designed by the distinguished National Artists Joaquim Victorino Ribeiro and Columbano Bordallo Pinheiro . "
“(...) The work undertaken by the auctor, which among other excellent qualities possesses that of being modest, was a company that only firm will, unbelievable work and superior intelligence could carry out. Having studied neither the time of 1820 nor the preceding period in which the spirits prepared for the great liberal evolution, the auctor renders valuable national service in carrying out this work, and even more so by the broad plan which he followed and the method he adopted. Editors making an artistic edition, with an accentuated national stamp, provide another service of undeniable value and make the work a true patriotic monument (...). ”
This work is considered fundamental for the study of this important event in the history of Portugal, illustrated with numerous lithographs printed in extra-text representing Portuguese kings and other relief figures, composed by national artists such as João Marques da Silva Oliveira, Columbano Bordallo Pinheiro, Caetano Moreira, Joaquim Vitorino Ribeiro.

Johan Splinter Stavorinus
REF.35369
Year 1798

Paris; Chez H. J. Jansen, Biblioteca Imprimeur; In-8th of VIII 434 (2) pages and 3 prints; Illustrated; Bound

"Chef d´escadre de la République Batave; avec des observations sur la Navigation et le Commerce de ces Contrées, ainsi que sur le Caractère, les Moeurs et la Religion des Peuples qui les habítent. Traduit du Hollandois par H. J. Jansen. Orné de trois cartes." A travelogue written by Johan Splinter Stavorinus, a naval officer of the Batavian Republic, originally published in Dutch and translated into French by Hendrik Jansen in 1798. The work recounts an extensive maritime journey that began in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, passing the Cape of Good Hope, and continuing on to Batavia (present-day Jakarta), Bantam (in Indonesia), and Bengal (in India), between 1768 and 1771. Throughout the book, Stavorinus offers a rich description of the places he visited, addressing cultural, social, and economic aspects of the colonial regions under European rule and the local peoples. He carefully observes customs, religions, clothing, architecture, and trade practices, in addition to recounting significant historical events such as the siege of Chinsura, the famine in the kingdom of Bahar, and the earthquakes in Batavia. The author also describes daily life in the colonies, including details on food, diseases, punishments applied to slaves, and the administrative organization of the Dutch possessions. Illustrated with three fold-out maps that illustrate the voyage route. Written in a typical 18th-century style, the text combines personal observations with reflections on maritime trade, navigation, and colonial policy. The work is considered a valuable source for the study of the European presence in Asia during the modern period and offers a detailed perspective on the colonial world of the 18th century. This copy is bound in contemporary print and is in good overall condition.

George Lloyd Hodges
REF.35464
Year 1833
1stEdition

London; James Fraser; In-8º of 2 volumes with XIII(1)333(3) and 384 pages; Illustrated; Bound "...under the orders of His Imperial Majesty Dom Pedro, Duke of Braganza." A detailed historical account of the military campaign led by Dom Pedro, Duke of Braganza, during the Portuguese Civil War. The author, a British officer who participated directly in the expedition, describes the events that culminated in the attempt to restore Dona Maria II's rights to the throne, contested by Dom Miguel's absolutist government. The work follows the organization of liberal troops in the Azores, the landing in northern Portugal, the capture of the city of Porto, and the fighting during the ensuing siege. In addition to military strategies and the difficulties faced, Hodges offers observations on the political context, local customs, and the morale of the forces involved. The book is considered a valuable source for understanding the Portuguese Civil War, revealing not only the behind-the-scenes story of the liberal campaign but also a foreign perspective on one of the most turbulent periods in 19th-century Portuguese history. Illustrated with a fold-out map of the country around the city of Porto. Copies in half-English bindings with faint signs of use, the pages in good condition. The map has a 2-cm tear and has been duly restored.
