Published separately from the «Revista Municipal», issues 101 to 109, in which the study began appearing in 1964. The work remains an important reference for the study of municipal institutions and Lisbon society during the late Middle Ages, and has been cited in subsequent historical research on medieval municipal administration.

First edition of this study by the architect Paulino Montez (1897–1988), delivered at a public session in the Noble Hall of Lisbon City Hall on 2 February 1935, as part of the second series of conferences devoted to urban planning issues. An interesting record of Portuguese architectural and urban planning debates during the 1930s, a period of profound transformation in the capital.

Divided into four chapters — «Formação da Urbe», «Traça Contemporânea», «Sector Monumental» and «Plano de Urbanização» — the work examines Lisbon's historical and morphological development, from the Roman period to contemporary times. The author considers the city's architectural, monumental and aesthetic problems, paying particular attention to Terreiro do Paço, Rossio, Avenida da Liberdade and Parque Eduardo VII. He advocates a systematic and rational urban development plan capable of reconciling the preservation of historical heritage with modern requirements for transport, housing, hygiene, public health and urban development.

Illustrated with maps and topographical diagrams, some based on the historical reconstructions of the engineer and Lisbon historian Augusto Vieira da Silva. Of particular interest to the history of Portuguese urban planning and the study of proposals for Lisbon's modernisation during the first half of the twentieth century.

Historical and descriptive study of São Jorge Castle by Augusto Vieira da Silva (1869–1951), a military engineer and distinguished researcher into the history and topography of Lisbon. Originally published in the «Revista de Engenharia Militar», this work represents one of the author's early contributions to the systematic study of the monuments and urban development of the Portuguese capital.

The work examines the castle's history, from its origins and successive transformations to its use as a military fortification, considering its architectural structure, walls, towers and other features of the monument. Of particular interest to military history, archaeology and Lisbon studies, it reflects the documentary rigour and attention to historical topography that would characterise Augusto Vieira da Silva's later research.

The edition includes a folding map, of particular interest for understanding the layout and spatial organisation of the fortified complex.
