RESPUESTA A LAS DUDAS que se pusieron a la Missa Panis Quem Ego Dabo de Palestina

REF.36540
Year 1958

Lisbon; Higher Culture Institute; In-4º of XXVI(68)31(9) pages; Illustrated; Paperback

This work brings together the famous musicological defense of King John IV in response to criticisms directed at Palestrina's mass, constituting one of the most important Portuguese texts on musical theory of the 17th century. This edition reproduces the original text in facsimile editions of the text in Spanish and Italian, and is enriched by an introduction and notes by the musicologist Mário de Sampayo Ribeiro, which contextualize the work and its historical relevance. This rare pamphlet of musical polemic attributed to King John IV, published anonymously in the mid-17th century, constitutes a response to criticisms directed at Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's mass Panis Quem Ego Dabo, defending the principles of modern music and the polyphonic tradition in the face of the aesthetic controversies of the time. Of great interest to the history of sacred music, music theory, and 17th-century Portuguese culture, this work represents an important document of the musicological activity of King John IV, recognized as one of the most notable patrons and scholars of music of his time. CATALOGO DA LIVRARIA DE MUSICA D´EL-REY D. JOÃO IV
CATALOGO DA LIVRARIA DE MUSICA D´EL-REY D. JOÃO IV

Joaquim de Vasconcellos
REF.35875
Year 1874
2ndEdition

Porto; Imprensa Portugueza; In-4º of 2 volumes with 525(7) and 368(2) pages; Bound

Originally published in 1649, this work is one of the most important documents in the history of music in Portugal and in European musical bibliography. It is an inventory of the extraordinary musical library assembled by D. João IV (1604-1656), King of Portugal, who was not only a monarch but also a great music lover and patron of music.

The catalog lists thousands of musical works, including theoretical treatises, sacred and secular scores, polyphonic compositions, and collections of plainchant, bringing together Portuguese and foreign authors. Among the names mentioned are central figures of Renaissance and Baroque music, such as Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria, and many others, as well as Portuguese composers of the time.
This second edition, published by Vasconcelos in Porto through the Portuguese Press, is a critical and annotated edition of the original 1649 catalog. His work was fundamental because it recovered and disseminated a very rare document, allowing scholars of Portuguese and European music to access the inventory of the famous musical library of King John IV.
This edition did not simply transcribe the catalog: Vasconcelos added explanatory notes, historical references, and comments on the listed authors and works, making it an indispensable source for the history of music in Portugal. It was thanks to this publication that many researchers were able to learn about the size of the king's musical library, since a large part of the originals were lost in the 1755 earthquake.

Year 1885
1stEdition

Porto; Stationery and Type Azevedo; In-8º of  349(1) pages; Illustrated; Bound

A pioneering treatise on social dance by A. Lopes, a dance teacher. The work bills itself as "The True Guide to Modern Dances" and stands out for being a national production, unlike the translated foreign manuals prevalent at the time. Divided into three parts, the book initially addresses issues of etiquette and behavior in social and dance settings, such as greetings, entering a room, gentlemen's duties, and appropriate attire. The following sections explain in detail various ballroom dances, including the waltz, mazurka, polka, Tirolienne, Sicilian, gallop, and Boston. Enriched with dozens of illustrative prints and fold-out scores, all signed by A. Silva, including a portrait of the author. A rare work that serves as a historical and cultural reference on dance customs and practices in 19th-century Portugal. Porto; Tipografia da Cooperativa do Povo Portuense; Volume 8, 105 (5) pages; Paperback

A collection of poems aimed at Portuguese youth. The work brings together verses that celebrate values such as patriotism, discipline, idealism, and youthful spirit, reflecting the cultural and political context of Salazarist Portugal at the time. With accessible and moving language, Alexandre Costa's poems evoke images of bravery, hope, and devotion to the homeland, aligning with the ideals promoted by Mocidade Portuguesa, a youth organization under the Estado Novo. Although not a work of official propaganda, the book engages with the nationalist and moralizing imagery that permeated education and youth culture in the 1960s. "This book is about music and the men and women who wrote and performed it. It sets it in the context of the times in which it was created, following its development from the early rhythms and songs to the seemingly confused sounds of contemporary music, and constitutes a fascinating story. From the preface: «I would only accept the title, always ambitious, History of Music for this book - whose first volume is now presented - if I could clarify, in defense of truth and rigor: history of music... that I know! It is with full awareness that I do not address in these thematic pages and repertoires that are strange to me, having to attribute this strangeness or ignorance to a lack of time and opportunities to deal with such matters, and never to a lesser curiosity in the face of musical phenomena. of high value that mark African cultures, China, India, Bali and many other points of the globe - not to mention the entire legacy, and only partially deciphered, by the civilizations of Antiquity. The reader will find in the two volumes foreseen of this work a summary of my reflections on the great adventure of music that I was given to contact in experiential terms...» Copy with slight stains on the brochure covers, inside in good condition.
