António Vieira, Padre
REF.36949
Year 1951

Porto; Lello & Irmão, Editores; In-8.º of 15 volumes; Illustrated; Bound.

Edition of the sermons of Father António Vieira (1608–1697), published as part of the «Obras-Primas da Literatura Portuguesa» series. Prefaced and revised by Father Gonçalo Alves, it brings together the sermons of the celebrated Portuguese Jesuit, one of the leading figures of Baroque literature and seventeenth-century religious and cultural history.

The collection includes sermons on religious, moral and political subjects, notably the Sermão da Sexagésima, the Sermão de Santo António aos Peixes and the Sermão pelo Bom Sucesso das Armas de Portugal contra as de Holanda. These texts demonstrate Vieira's importance as an orator, both for their literary and rhetorical qualities and for the insight they provide into Portuguese society and the colonial world of his time. The first volume includes a portrait of the author.

Originalité et dépendances d'une liturgie particulière au Moyen Âge

Paris; Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian — Centro Cultural Português; In-4.º of IX(1), 623(3) pages and 6 leaves of separate plates; Illustrated; Bound.

An important study by Pedro Romano Rocha (1926–2006), devoted to the history and distinctive characteristics of the medieval liturgy of Braga. Originally presented as a doctoral thesis at the Institut Supérieur de Liturgie in Paris in 1976, the work examines the development of the Braga rite, its connections with Hispanic and European liturgical traditions, and the evolution of the Divine Office within the archdiocese. Particular attention is given to the medieval manuscript known as the «Breviary of Soeiro», a fundamental source for the study of Braga's liturgical tradition, examined from historical, textual and musical perspectives.

With a preface by Pierre-Marie Gy, the book forms volume XV of the «Cultura Medieval e Moderna» series, published by the Portuguese Cultural Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Written in French, with Latin liturgical texts and documentary transcriptions, it is an essential reference for the religious history of Braga and the study of medieval Portuguese liturgy.

REF.36336
Year 1632

Coimbra; Nicolao Carvalho; In-8º of (8) 48 leaves; Bound

Unpublished edition of this "Rule of the Glorious Patriarch St. Benedict". It constitutes one of the most significant milestones in the editorial and religious history of Portugal. The project was fully financed by the Congregation of St. Benedict of Portugal, and its re-edition and coordination were under the direct responsibility of the Reverend Father Friar Tomás do Socorro, who served as General of the Congregation in the kingdom. This volume represented the second printing of the rule in national territory, arising with the purpose of updating and replacing previous editorial efforts, such as the well-known version by Friar Plácido Villalobos dated 1586. The text meticulously regulates the daily life of the monks, covering everything from the distribution of food and the rigor of clothing to the criteria of authority and the process of electing the Abbot. Copy with recent cloth binding, interior with the first 10 pages excessively trimmed on the right margin, the rest with good margins. Illustrated with an engraving placed before the title page which we believe is not part of the work. Owner's signature on the title page.

Manuel da Nóbrega, Padre
REF.35703
Year 1954

Lisbon; União Gráfica - 4th Centenary of the Foundation of São Paulo; In-4º of 133(3) pages; Paperback

A work written by Father Manuel da Nóbrega, a central figure in the Jesuit mission in Brazil during the 16th century. Written as a dialogue between two characters—Mateus Nogueira, a religious man, and Gonçalo Álvares, a healer of the Indians—the text presents a debate on the possibility of evangelizing indigenous peoples. Gonçalo Álvares expresses doubts about the ability of gentiles to understand Christian teachings, while Mateus Nogueira argues that all people, regardless of their origins, are capable of receiving faith and divine grace. The work, brief and structured in ten paragraphs, reflects the humanist and theological thought of the time, influenced by Plato and the scholastic tradition, and reveals the Jesuits' efforts to justify the evangelizing mission as part of the divine plan. This text is considered one of the earliest records of informative literature about Brazil and offers a critical and sensitive view of the dilemmas faced by religious leaders during the colonization and catechesis of indigenous peoples. This copy is in good condition, with some pages still unopened.

Tomás Ramon
REF.34732
Year 1635

Zaragoza; Diego Dormer; In-8th of (24) 390 (10) pages; Bound

Very rare first edition of this important and esteemed book, one of the most interesting works we have for the study of morals, customs and practices of the 17th century, with special mention of the rules of dress and the use of ornaments and other luxuries. To develop this work, the author relies on texts from doctors of the Church and regulations issued by the Crown (Philip IV, Pragmatics of 1623). Since the Modern Age, the Crown has been issuing pragmatic measures aimed at controlling luxury in clothing. The Dominican Tomás Ramón imagined a society in which the individuals that formed it were differentiated by the clothing with which they covered their bodies. The first chapter is devoted to the abuse of oils, the second to excessive female hairstyles, the third to the footwear that should be worn, the fourth to women, the fifth to clothing, the sixth to widows, the seventh to all states, the eighth to horses and carriages, the ninth to cultured language, and the tenth and last to the abuse of tobacco and the regulation of its consumption. Illustrated with the coat of arms of Zaragoza engraved in woodcut. Copy with full leather binding, core with occasional old restorations, in good general condition. It has ownership signatures on the title page.

Manoel de Santa Anna Braga, Fr.
REF.36065
Year 1784

Lisbon; Regia Officina Typographica; In-8º of (12) 120 pages; Bound

"The Determinations of Natural, Divine, Canonical, and Civil Law are shown. The Doctrine of Moral Theologians is explained, and finally a true System is proposed for those who wish to lend money at interest to follow without scruple of conscience." This treatise seeks to define, in the light of theology and law, under what conditions it is morally legitimate to charge interest on loans. The author systematically examines natural, divine, canonical, and civil law, confronting them with the doctrine of moral theologians, and seeks to resolve the doubts of conscience that surrounded the practice of interest at a time when usury was still a delicate subject. The work culminates in the proposal of a "true system" that would allow reconciling the economic need for credit with the ethical and religious limits then in force, becoming a representative text of the Luso-Catholic debate on finance and morality at the end of the 18th century. Copy with half-English binding with slight signs of handling and traces of woodworm, clean interior and maintaining the sonority of the paper.

Lisbon; Typography of the Royal Academy of Sciences; In-4º of 17(1) pages; Paperback

Pioneering study on pre-Roman religiosity in the Iberian Peninsula, centered on the figure of Endovélico, one of the main deities venerated by the Lusitanians. The work gathers and interprets epigraphic inscriptions, local traditions, and classical references to understand the role of this god, associated with healing, protection, and oracles, whose cult developed mainly in the Alandroal region, where there was an important sanctuary. Written in the erudite and antiquarian style typical of the 19th century, the research seeks to value the indigenous spiritual heritage and show how Lusitanian cults were transformed with Romanization, while maintaining original traits.
