Year 1844

Porto; Imprensa Constitucional; In-8º of 60 issues; Bound

A rare collection of all 60 issues of the Official Bulletin of the Civil Government of Porto from 1844. This publication constitutes a rich documentary source for the study of the political instability that marked the beginning of the 1840s in Portugal. Published almost daily, these bulletins follow in real time the developments of the Torres Novas Revolt and the Siege of Almeida, central episodes of the resistance to the Cabral government. Through dispatches, military communiqués, administrative reports, and official notes, the bulletins reveal the climate of tension in the country, troop movements, repressive strategies, and the speeches of local authorities. This collection offers a vivid portrait of government action during one of the most significant insurrections of the period, serving as direct testimony to the struggle between liberal sectors and the central government, and anticipating the conflicts that would culminate in the Maria da Fonte and Patuleia revolts. Each bulletin consists of a single sheet of paper of varying sizes and printed on different types of paper. Copies are bound in a single volume, with evidence of wood-eating on the binding. The core is in good condition. Includes ex-libris.

Monumental work, illustrated in extra text in color and black and white, with vignettes and chapter openings by Continelli Telmo. With the collaboration of Jaime Cortesão, Agostinho Fortes, Joaquim de Carvalho, F. Reis Santos, Manuel Maria Coelho, Lopes de Oliveira, Luz de Almeida e Bourbon and Meneses. From the warning: "From History it can be concluded — more than from any branch of human science — that two particular and distinct ways of being compete in it, and that they are: one that, due to its narrative nature, evokes and draws civilizations, facts, events , recomposing the restless scenario of each era; another that, when used by the historian, determines the causes that preceded these events, establishing the laws of subjective relationship that justify and govern the action and life of humanity. (...) These two ways of being combine, when history is perfect, into a single value, resulting in unity. And thus, the historical problem, as someone said, is like the resurrection of integral, intense and profound life (...) Pioneering study on pre-Roman religiosity in the Iberian Peninsula, centered on the figure of Endovélico, one of the main deities venerated by the Lusitanians. The work gathers and interprets epigraphic inscriptions, local traditions, and classical references to understand the role of this god, associated with healing, protection, and oracles, whose cult developed mainly in the Alandroal region, where there was an important sanctuary. Written in the erudite and antiquarian style typical of the 19th century, the research seeks to value the indigenous spiritual heritage and show how Lusitanian cults were transformed with Romanization, while maintaining original traits.
