Tomás Ramon
REF.34732
Year 1635

Zaragoza; Diego Dormer; In-8th of (24) 390 (10) pages; Bound

Very rare first edition of this important and esteemed book, one of the most interesting works we have for the study of morals, customs and practices of the 17th century, with special mention of the rules of dress and the use of ornaments and other luxuries. To develop this work, the author relies on texts from doctors of the Church and regulations issued by the Crown (Philip IV, Pragmatics of 1623). Since the Modern Age, the Crown has been issuing pragmatic measures aimed at controlling luxury in clothing. The Dominican Tomás Ramón imagined a society in which the individuals that formed it were differentiated by the clothing with which they covered their bodies. The first chapter is devoted to the abuse of oils, the second to excessive female hairstyles, the third to the footwear that should be worn, the fourth to women, the fifth to clothing, the sixth to widows, the seventh to all states, the eighth to horses and carriages, the ninth to cultured language, and the tenth and last to the abuse of tobacco and the regulation of its consumption. Illustrated with the coat of arms of Zaragoza engraved in woodcut. Copy with full leather binding, core with occasional old restorations, in good general condition. It has ownership signatures on the title page.

MEMORIAS HISTORICO-GENEALOGICAS DOS DUQUES PORTUGUEZES DO SECULO XIX
MEMORIAS HISTORICO-GENEALOGICAS DOS DUQUES PORTUGUEZES DO SECULO XIX

João Carlos Feo Cardoso de Castello Branco e Torres ; Visconde de Sanches Baena
REF.15281
Year 1883
1stEdition

Lisbon; Typographia of the Royal Academy of Sciences; In-4 of 807 (1) pages; Broached

Contains leaflets with trees from sides of several aristocratic families.
The work due to its extension surpassed the material and temporal possibility of the authors; besides genealogy includes history and Portuguese politics in the nineteenth century. After the death of Feo the work was continued by Sanches de Baena (1822-1909). Born in Vila do Conde, he emigrated to Brazil where he married in 1859, returned to Portugal and was made a viscount in 1869 by D. Luís I. The most focused part of this work is the history and genealogy of Portuguese ducal houses in the century XIX that gave the justification to the authors to write about all the other titular families their contemporaries in century XIX. The holders (marquises, counts, viscounts and barons) mentioned throughout this extensive work are in an index. The `main subject` - the Portuguese dukes - include the Duke of Victory, descendant of Arthur Wellesly, also Duke of Wellington. The other ducal houses mentioned are: Cadaval, Lafões, Terceira, Palmela, Saldanha, Loulé and Ávila and Bolama. INOCÊNCIO III, 339 and III, 204: João Carlos Feo Cardoso de Castello Branco e Torres, Fidalgo da Casa Real, Commander of the Order of Avis, retired Lieutenant-Colonel, corresponding partner of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, etc. He was born on October 1, 1798, the son of Luiz da Mota Feo and his wife, D. Leocadia Thereza Possidonia de Lima and Mello Falcão Van-Zeller. He died in 1868. - Review of the Families of the Titles of Portugal, the pairs of the kingdom and the gentlemen who exercise in the Palace. Accompanied by the historical and genealogical description of the same families, etc. Lisbon, in typ. of the Franco-Portuguese typographic society, 1863. 8th gr. the impression by the death of the auctor, and by the fallacy of the first editors j. melchiades & c.ª, established in lisbon in Rua Aurea, was interrupted since pag.736, and comprised the families of the dukes of Lafões, Cadaval, Terceira, Palmella, and Saldanha. Only in the first volume of this work were the Dukes of Loulé and Avila and Bolama missing. Viscount de Sanches de Baena, one of the most conscientious genealogical investigators, proposed to continue the work of Feo, which the Royal Academy of Sciences accepted, deciding that the printing would be on his own account and out of his documents. The work, amplified or completed by sr. Viscount, it is probable that he is entitled with the title of Biographical and Genealogical Review of the Families of all the Dukes in Portugal, our contemporaries, etc. some collectors have the incomplete work of Feo, save, it seems, from the sale by weight of the printed paper, which belonged to him. There is a copy in the National Bibliotheca. In the forefinger reads the following title: Review of the Houses of Portugal, etc. - Cadaval, Lafões and Dukes. There was confusion in the way of describing the last printed work of Feo, by the indecision in which was the illustrious continuant and my friend, Mr. Viscount de Sanches de Baena, in the title with which he would publish it. The pages printed by the publishers Melchiades & C.ª, of which it was said, have nothing in common with those which the Royal Academy of Sciences had printed during the lifetime of Feo, and which arrived at pag. 737. From that time on it is the work of the said mr. Viscount and left the final under the title of Historical-Genealogical Memorials of the Portuguese Dukes of the XIX Century. Lisbon, by order and in the Typology of the Royal Academy of Sciences, 1883. 4º de 807 pag.
Exemplary with slight defects of paper in the covers of brochure, kernel in good state of conservation. Keep the pages unopened.

Porto; Imprensa do Gandra; In-8º of 43(1) pages; Illustrated; Paperback

An unusual political pamphlet typical of the turbulent period that followed the Liberal Revolution of 1820. The work functions as a manifesto of exaltation of the new liberal regime, defending civic participation, loyalty to the Constitution, and rejection of absolutism. A relevant pamphlet for understanding the Portuguese Civil War and the intense debate that took place throughout the 19th century regarding the rights of succession to the Crown. José Agostinho de Macedo
REF.36103
Year 1831

Lisbon; Royal Printing Office; In-8º of 8 pages; Paperback

This letter, written in Lisbon on August 15, 1831, is a direct response to an article published by José Agostinho de Macedo in the periodical *O Desengano*. The author, under the pseudonym "The Friend of Law and Legitimacy," initially praises Macedo's erudition but contests his interpretation of the 1661 Treaty, which established the Anglo-Portuguese alliance. The letter defends the legitimacy of the alliance and criticizes the actions of the Portuguese government—namely that of D. Miguel I—in the face of French hostilities and the blockade of Porto, highlighting the absence of reprisals against French citizens. The text reveals the tense political climate of the time, marked by the Portuguese Civil War and the dispute between absolutists and liberals, and contributes to the debate on diplomacy, sovereignty, and legality at a time of profound national instability. Year 1786

Lisbon; At the Office of Antonio Gomes; In-8º of 4 volumes with XXXII 374, 446, 467(1) and 487(1) pages; Bound

This is one of the most significant eighteenth-century works dedicated to Portuguese overseas expansion. This edition corresponds to the first Portuguese translation, attributed by Inocêncio to Manuel de Sousa, of the work originally printed in French in 1733 under the title Histoire des découvertes et conquestes des Portugais dans le Nouveau Monde, by Joseph François Lafitau. Father Lafitau (1681–1746), a French Jesuit, missionary and renowned ethnologist, was a figure of great intellectual prestige in his time. His writings are distinguished by their pioneering attention to indigenous cultures and by the articulation between history, anthropology and religion, which gives the work a particular value within the historiography of the discoveries. A bibliographic piece of great interest. Copies with contemporary bindings, with traces of woodworm inside the covers, without affecting the text block. The text block is clean and retains the original sound of the paper.

RETRATO DE LOS JESUITAS formado al natural Por los mas Sábios, y mas Ilustres Cathólicos

REF.36069
Year 1768

Madrid; Office of the Widow of Eliseo Sanchez; In-8º of (8) 278 (4) pages; Hardcover

A controversial work, integrated into the vast anti-Jesuit literature that flourished in Europe after the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from several Catholic kingdoms. The book brings together testimonies, criticisms, and judgments of Catholic authors who, according to the compiler, describe "naturally" the character, methods, and influence of the Jesuits. With an openly hostile tone, the work presents the Jesuits as agents of political intrigue, intellectual ambition, and excessive moral power, reflecting the climate of distrust that preceded the suppression of the Order in 1773. A rare and particularly significant edition within the anti-Jesuit literature of the 18th century. Published at a time of enormous political tension — immediately after the expulsions of the Society of Jesus from Portugal (1759), France (1764) and Spain (1767) — this edition emerges as part of the wave of pamphlets that accompanied the fall of the Order, reflecting the climate of hostility that preceded its universal suppression in 1773. Copy with solid contemporary binding with slight signs of handling, interior with traces of woodworm on the first twenty pages without affecting the reading of the text, clean interior and maintaining the sonority of the paper.

Mixing adventure, satire and social criticism, the book follows the protagonist as he narrates, with humor and irony, his experiences in a time of political and moral instability. Diogo do Couto
REF.33001
Year 1790

Lisbon; Office of the Royal Academy of Sciences; In-8th of IV(2)161(1) and 110 pages; Brocade

A rare work in which Couto criticizes the abuses and evils that afflicted the government of Portuguese India at the beginning of the 17th century. This edition has a numbering error on the preliminary pages numbered from 3 onwards due to a typographical error. António Caetano do Amaral, in the introduction to this first printed edition, reveals that the original manuscript had been acquired by the Academy. Diogo do Couto, driven by zeal for the public good, had composed the book entitled “Practical Soldier.” However, the original was stolen before it was perfected and reached this realm without the author's name. Years later, Couto himself reformed the work, almost recreating it. Amaral highlights the importance of continuing the search for more correct manuscripts to improve future editions and preserve the author's genuine composition.
