Luiz Augusto Rebello da Silva

Lisbon; National Press; In-8th of 5 volumes; Brocade

Facsimile of this work originally published in 1860. The Dictionary of History of Portugal (Joel Serrão, ed., vol. V, Initiatives Editorials, Lisbon, 1979) tells us about Rebelo da Silva (1822-1871): «(...) As a historian, he also sought to take Herculaneum as a model, but preferred to study the so-called modern period. (...) [This History of Yours... is a] work that is undoubtedly worthy of the informative data it brings together, but whose content does not correspond to the title. In fact, Rebelo da Silva [certainly because death interrupted his work] remained at the end of the 16th century and only furtively, on one level or another, penetrated 17th-century material. Fernão Guerreiro from Companhia de Jesus, born in Almodôvar in Portugal. New edition directed and prefaced by Artur Viegas " "It permeates in the beautiful work of Fernão Guerreiro, as in a gigantic `film`, all over the vast geographical area of the countless regions, where the children of the Society of Jesus of the Province of Portugal exercised their zeal and apostolic activity. So quickly does the chronicler lead us to perlustrate the secrets, for so many hidden centuries, of the mysterious China of typhoons and mandarins, as it leads us to the amazing mountain range of the Indo-Cuche and the cold solitudes of the Palmir plateau (Pamech), country of mountains perpetually covered with snow, canyons and deep valleys, in the middle of which we will find the intrepid Brother Bento de Góis, a heroic missionary who, in the midst of a merchant windmill, with a turban and a turban, who, first of all, unveiled the mystery of Cataio in Europe ". Very important and indispensable source of consultation for the history of the Society of Jesus and its gigantic civilizing and missionary action in lands of the East, Africa and Brazil and, consequently, an extremely valuable element for the knowledge of the glorious period of the discoveries and conquests of the Portuguese. The edition, very careful, is illustrated with a geographical map of Japan, facsimiles of faces of very rare editions of the dawn of the 17th century. Paris; J. P. Aillaud; In-8th of 589(3) pages; Brocade

First and only published volume of this remarkable work by Manuel Francisco de Barros e Sousa de Mesquita de Macedo Leitão e Carvalhosa, the 2nd Viscount of Santarém. In this work, the viscount brought together all the treaties of peace, alliance, neutrality, truce, trade, limits, marriage agreements and cessions of territory related to the diplomatic history of Portugal. Perfectly handling the French language, the Viscount of Santarém was knowledgeable about Portuguese rights. His profound knowledge of these matters made him an authority consulted by our minister in London, the Count of Lavradio. Whenever there were important colonial issues to discuss with the English government, the earl turned to the viscount, who was always willing to offer his experience and wisdom. The Viscount of Santarém's contribution to Portuguese diplomatic history is invaluable, and his work continues to be a valuable reference for scholars and those interested in international relations and treaties. DIÁLOGO SOBRE A CONVERSÃO DO GENTIO

Manuel da Nóbrega, Padre
REF.35703
Year 1954

Lisbon; União Gráfica - 4th Centenary of the Foundation of São Paulo; In-4º of 133(3) pages; Paperback

A work written by Father Manuel da Nóbrega, a central figure in the Jesuit mission in Brazil during the 16th century. Written as a dialogue between two characters—Mateus Nogueira, a religious man, and Gonçalo Álvares, a healer of the Indians—the text presents a debate on the possibility of evangelizing indigenous peoples. Gonçalo Álvares expresses doubts about the ability of gentiles to understand Christian teachings, while Mateus Nogueira argues that all people, regardless of their origins, are capable of receiving faith and divine grace. The work, brief and structured in ten paragraphs, reflects the humanist and theological thought of the time, influenced by Plato and the scholastic tradition, and reveals the Jesuits' efforts to justify the evangelizing mission as part of the divine plan. This text is considered one of the earliest records of informative literature about Brazil and offers a critical and sensitive view of the dilemmas faced by religious leaders during the colonization and catechesis of indigenous peoples. This copy is in good condition, with some pages still unopened.

Tomás Ramon
REF.34732
Year 1635

Zaragoza; Diego Dormer; In-8th of (24) 390 (10) pages; Bound

Very rare first edition of this important and esteemed book, one of the most interesting works we have for the study of morals, customs and practices of the 17th century, with special mention of the rules of dress and the use of ornaments and other luxuries. To develop this work, the author relies on texts from doctors of the Church and regulations issued by the Crown (Philip IV, Pragmatics of 1623). Since the Modern Age, the Crown has been issuing pragmatic measures aimed at controlling luxury in clothing. The Dominican Tomás Ramón imagined a society in which the individuals that formed it were differentiated by the clothing with which they covered their bodies. The first chapter is devoted to the abuse of oils, the second to excessive female hairstyles, the third to the footwear that should be worn, the fourth to women, the fifth to clothing, the sixth to widows, the seventh to all states, the eighth to horses and carriages, the ninth to cultured language, and the tenth and last to the abuse of tobacco and the regulation of its consumption. Illustrated with the coat of arms of Zaragoza engraved in woodcut. Copy with full leather binding, core with occasional old restorations, in good general condition. It has ownership signatures on the title page.

MEMORIAS HISTORICO-GENEALOGICAS DOS DUQUES PORTUGUEZES DO SECULO XIX

João Carlos Feo Cardoso de Castello Branco e Torres ; Visconde de Sanches Baena
REF.15281
Year 1883
1stEdition

Lisbon; Typographia of the Royal Academy of Sciences; In-4 of 807 (1) pages; Broached

Contains leaflets with trees from sides of several aristocratic families.
The work due to its extension surpassed the material and temporal possibility of the authors; besides genealogy includes history and Portuguese politics in the nineteenth century. After the death of Feo the work was continued by Sanches de Baena (1822-1909). Born in Vila do Conde, he emigrated to Brazil where he married in 1859, returned to Portugal and was made a viscount in 1869 by D. Luís I. The most focused part of this work is the history and genealogy of Portuguese ducal houses in the century XIX that gave the justification to the authors to write about all the other titular families their contemporaries in century XIX. The holders (marquises, counts, viscounts and barons) mentioned throughout this extensive work are in an index. The `main subject` - the Portuguese dukes - include the Duke of Victory, descendant of Arthur Wellesly, also Duke of Wellington. The other ducal houses mentioned are: Cadaval, Lafões, Terceira, Palmela, Saldanha, Loulé and Ávila and Bolama. INOCÊNCIO III, 339 and III, 204: João Carlos Feo Cardoso de Castello Branco e Torres, Fidalgo da Casa Real, Commander of the Order of Avis, retired Lieutenant-Colonel, corresponding partner of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, etc. He was born on October 1, 1798, the son of Luiz da Mota Feo and his wife, D. Leocadia Thereza Possidonia de Lima and Mello Falcão Van-Zeller. He died in 1868. - Review of the Families of the Titles of Portugal, the pairs of the kingdom and the gentlemen who exercise in the Palace. Accompanied by the historical and genealogical description of the same families, etc. Lisbon, in typ. of the Franco-Portuguese typographic society, 1863. 8th gr. the impression by the death of the auctor, and by the fallacy of the first editors j. melchiades & c.ª, established in lisbon in Rua Aurea, was interrupted since pag.736, and comprised the families of the dukes of Lafões, Cadaval, Terceira, Palmella, and Saldanha. Only in the first volume of this work were the Dukes of Loulé and Avila and Bolama missing. Viscount de Sanches de Baena, one of the most conscientious genealogical investigators, proposed to continue the work of Feo, which the Royal Academy of Sciences accepted, deciding that the printing would be on his own account and out of his documents. The work, amplified or completed by sr. Viscount, it is probable that he is entitled with the title of Biographical and Genealogical Review of the Families of all the Dukes in Portugal, our contemporaries, etc. some collectors have the incomplete work of Feo, save, it seems, from the sale by weight of the printed paper, which belonged to him. There is a copy in the National Bibliotheca. In the forefinger reads the following title: Review of the Houses of Portugal, etc. - Cadaval, Lafões and Dukes. There was confusion in the way of describing the last printed work of Feo, by the indecision in which was the illustrious continuant and my friend, Mr. Viscount de Sanches de Baena, in the title with which he would publish it. The pages printed by the publishers Melchiades & C.ª, of which it was said, have nothing in common with those which the Royal Academy of Sciences had printed during the lifetime of Feo, and which arrived at pag. 737. From that time on it is the work of the said mr. Viscount and left the final under the title of Historical-Genealogical Memorials of the Portuguese Dukes of the XIX Century. Lisbon, by order and in the Typology of the Royal Academy of Sciences, 1883. 4º de 807 pag.
