REF.36849
Year 1801
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Regia Officina Typografica; In-4.º of 13(1) pages; Softcover.

Important official Portuguese edition of the Treaty of Badajoz, signed on 6 June 1801, which brought an end to the War of the Oranges between Portugal and Spain during the French Revolutionary Wars. Concluded by the representatives of Prince Regent João and King Charles IV of Spain, the treaty established peace between the two Iberian monarchies under conditions unfavourable to Portugal, including the cession of Olivença to the Spanish Crown and the closure of Portuguese ports to British vessels.

The treaty is a fundamental document for understanding Portuguese foreign policy at the beginning of the nineteenth century and the pressures exerted upon Portugal by Napoleonic France and its Spanish ally, foreshadowing the conflicts that would culminate in the French invasions. The question of sovereignty over Olivença, arising from this agreement, remained one of the most enduring diplomatic disputes between the two countries. This edition is recorded in Special List 341: The Peninsular War, by Richard C. Ramer, pages 77–78, where it is distinguished from another contemporary folio printing. A work of particular interest for the history of Portuguese diplomacy and Iberian relations.

JUIZO SOBRE BONAPARTE DIRIGIDO PELO GENERAL DUMOURIEZ Á NAÇÃO FRANCEZA E Á EUROPA

General Dumouriez
REF.36850
Year 1808
1stEdition

Lisbon; Na Impressão Regia; In-4.º of 57(1) pages; Softcover.

Rare Portuguese edition of a political work by the French general Charles-François du Périer Dumouriez (1739–1823), a prominent military figure of the French Revolutionary Wars who, after commanding the revolutionary armies and achieving important victories, broke with the National Convention and became an opponent of the French regime. In this work, he addresses the French nation and Europe with a critical assessment of Napoleon Bonaparte, denouncing his political and military ambitions and the dangers of the expansion of Napoleonic power.

Printed in Lisbon in 1808, the year of the French invasion and the Portuguese uprising against the occupation, this edition belongs to the anti-Napoleonic political literature circulated during the Peninsular War. The work is recorded in the Napoleonic bibliography of the Portuguese Army Library, which identifies Luís Caetano Altina de Campos as its Portuguese translator. An interesting historical document concerning political propaganda and the circulation of ideas during a particularly turbulent period in European history.

HISTORIA DO CONSULADO E DO IMPERIO (12 volumes)

A. Thiers
REF.36603
Year s/d

Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon; Empreza Litteraria Fluminense de A. A. da Silva Lobo; In-8º of 12 volumes; Illustrated; Bound

One of the most important works by Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), dedicated to the history of the Consulate and the Napoleonic Empire, from the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte to power to the definitive fall of the Empire in 1815. A work of great historiographical importance, it combines political and military narrative with a detailed description of the main events of the Napoleonic period.

Of particular interest to the history of Portugal, the work focuses on the French Invasions, describing the occupation of Portugal by Junot's troops in 1807-1808, the Portuguese revolt and the intervention of British forces, as well as the second French invasion of 1809, commanded by Marshal Soult, and the events that led to the French retreat. The 1810-1811 campaign and Massena's invasion are equally framed within the narrative of the Peninsular War.

Illustrated edition for Portugal and Brazil, with numerous prints relating to the main events and characters of the period.

ORDEM DO DIA DO DUQUE DE ABRANTES 11 DE JUNHO DE 1808 | Invasões Francesas Revola no Porto

REF.36565
Year 1808

s/l; Imperial and Royal Printing; In-4º of 1 sheet; Paperback

Important order of the day published by General Jean-Andoche Junot, Duke of Abrantes, addressed to the French troops stationed in Portugal following the events in Spain and the arrest of the French governor of Porto, François-Jean-Baptiste de Quesnel, by General Belestá. The document urged French soldiers to maintain discipline, firmness, and loyalty to Emperor Napoleon, preparing them to face the growing hostility of the Portuguese population and the spread of the Peninsular insurrection.

The order reflects the climate of tension experienced in the last months of the French occupation, when Junot's administration was beginning to lose control of the territory in the face of the multiplication of resistance movements. More than a simple military instruction, it constitutes a piece of propaganda intended to raise the morale of the troops and reaffirm the authority of the French command at a time when the war was assuming an increasingly generalized dimension.

A document of great interest to the history of the French Invasions and the Peninsular War, constituting a valuable testimony to Junot's military strategy and political action in the months leading up to the expulsion of French troops from Portugal.

REF.36567
Year 1808

s/l; Imperial and Royal Printing; In-4º of 4 pages; Paperback

Important proclamation issued by General Jean-Andoche Junot during the French occupation of Portugal, decreeing that Portuguese soldiers serving the French administration would receive the same pay and allowance (rations and provisions) granted to the troops of the Napoleonic army. The measure aimed to ensure the loyalty of the Portuguese military, promoting their integration into the forces under French command and reinforcing the discipline and stability of the occupying government.

The decree is part of the policy developed by Junot to consolidate French dominion over the Kingdom, seeking to win the support or, at least, the collaboration of the Portuguese troops through the equalization of remuneration and subsistence conditions. It constitutes a significant testimony to the strategies employed by the Napoleonic administration to maintain military order and guarantee the functioning of the armed forces during the occupation.

A document of great interest for the history of the French Invasions, the Portuguese military organization, and Junot's administration, illustrating the measures adopted to ensure the cooperation of national troops during the French occupation of 1808.

REF.36568
Year 1808

s/l Imperial and Royal Printing; In-4º of 4 pages; Paperback

An important military proclamation published by General Jean-Andoche Junot during the French occupation of Portugal, in which he determined severe repressive measures against any localities that rebelled against the Napoleonic army. The edict declared that all cities, towns, or villages whose inhabitants took up arms against the French troops would be plundered, destroyed, and their inhabitants "put to fire and sword," constituting an explicit threat intended to discourage any resistance movement.

Promulgated at a time when popular uprisings were beginning to emerge in various regions of the Kingdom, the proclamation reveals the growing concern of the French administration with the loss of control over Portugal and the adoption of a policy of intimidation to maintain the submission of the population. The document constitutes one of the most expressive testimonies of the harshness of the Napoleonic occupation and the coercive measures employed to contain the Portuguese insurrection which, a few weeks later, would begin the Peninsular War. This document is of exceptional interest to the history of the French Invasions, the Peninsular War, and Napoleonic military propaganda. It constitutes one of the most severe proclamations issued by Junot during the occupation of Portugal and a remarkable testament to the policy of repression adopted by the French authorities in 1808.

Important proclamation issued by Sir Hugh Dalrymple, commander of the British forces in Portugal, following the signing of the Convention of Sintra and the expulsion of French troops from Portuguese territory. Addressed to the population of the Kingdom, the proclamation announced the restoration of tranquility and legitimate authority, appealing for the maintenance of public order, obedience to the constituted authorities, and cooperation between the Portuguese and their British allies during the process of reorganizing the country.

The document is part of one of the decisive moments of the Peninsular War, when the British army played a crucial role in liberating Portugal from Napoleonic occupation. It reflects the concern to ensure a peaceful transition after the withdrawal of Junot's forces, to protect people and property, and to consolidate the Anglo-Portuguese alliance that would mark the course of the war against Napoleon in the Iberian Peninsula.

An important proclamation published by the Governors of the Kingdom following the liberation of Portugal from French rule, addressing the Portuguese Nation to announce the reestablishment of legitimate royal authority and calling upon the Portuguese to unite and defend the Fatherland.
