INTRODUÇÃO À LITERATURA DO SÉCULO XX ensaio de epistemologia literária
INTRODUÇÃO À LITERATURA DO SÉCULO XX ensaio de epistemologia literária

Vintila Horia
REF.21796
Year 1978

Lisbon; Arcádia; In-8.º of 409(3) pages; Paperback.

First Portuguese edition of «Introducción a la literatura del siglo XX», originally published in Madrid in 1976. Vintila Horia proposes a broad interpretation of contemporary literature, regarding it as a form of knowledge comparable, though expressed in its own language, to philosophy, science, psychology and the arts. He examines the major literary movements of the 20th century and their relationship with the profound cultural and intellectual transformations of modernity.

The study covers the European avant-gardes, Futurism, Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism, as well as authors such as Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Kafka, Musil, Broch, Rilke, Thomas Mann, Hemingway and other major figures of modern literature. Translated by João Maia. A work of particular interest for the study of literary theory and the intellectual and aesthetic currents of the 20th century.

Lima de Freitas
REF.36813
Year 1977

Lisbon; Arcádia; In-8.º of 232 pages; Illustrated; Paperback.

First edition of this important collection of essays by Lima de Freitas, Portuguese painter, illustrator and thinker. The author develops a reflection on image and imagination, exploring the relationships between artistic creation, perception, symbol and knowledge. The image is approached beyond its purely visual dimension, as a vehicle of meaning and an instrument for understanding reality, from a perspective combining art, philosophy and symbolic thought.

A representative work of Lima de Freitas's theoretical writings and the interdisciplinary nature of his thought. Profusely illustrated, including plates outside the text, it was published as no. 2 of the «Artes e Letras» series, directed by the author himself. The significance of the work was reaffirmed by its republication forty years later by IADE, an institution of which Lima de Freitas was the first director.

Second Portuguese edition, revised and enlarged in accordance with the tenth Italian edition, of «Saper vedere l’architettura», one of Bruno Zevi's fundamental works and a classic of 20th-century architectural theory and criticism. Translated by Maria Isabel Gaspar and Gaëtan Martins de Oliveira. Illustrated throughout and with additional plates containing numerous photographs and drawings; published as no. 1 of the «Artes e Letras» series.

Denis Diderot
REF.36800
Year 1975

Lisbon; Arcádia; In-8.º of 219(5) pages; Paperback.

Third edition of this Portuguese translation of «La Religieuse», a novel written by Diderot around 1760 and published posthumously in book form in 1796. The work originated in a literary hoax devised by Diderot and several friends involving the Marquis de Croismare, subsequently developing into one of the author's best-known narratives. Translated by João Gaspar Simões. A particularly representative work of Diderot's Enlightenment thought, combining criticism of religious institutions, a defence of individual freedom and a penetrating psychological portrayal of its protagonist.

Al Berto
REF.7371
Year 1982

Lisbon; Contexto Editora; In-8.º of 78 pages; Paperback.

Expanded edition of one of the fundamental works from the first phase of Al Berto's poetry. The original edition, issued in a very limited circulation, had been published by the author in Sines earlier that same year; this Contexto edition substantially enlarged the collection and marked the poet's entry into a wider publishing circuit.

A work centred on the gaze, memory and the relationship between writing and image, permeated by a strong corporeal and homoerotic dimension. Photography, desire, solitude, landscape and urban experience emerge through fragmentary and intensely sensory writing, already revealing several elements that would become characteristic of Al Berto's poetry. A particularly significant title in the development of his work, later incorporated into «O Medo».

Leiria; Editorial Diferença; In-8.º of 230(2) pages; Paperback.

First edition of this poetic collection by Casimiro de Brito, bringing together «Intensidades», «Onde o Corpo Acaba», «Opus Affettuoso», «Última Núpcia» and «Ofício de Oleiro», combining previously published texts with others then unpublished. The volume displays a notable poetic unity, characterised by purified language, brevity and expressive concentration.

The author himself conceived «Arte Pobre» as a search for increasingly refined poems reduced to their essentials. Love, the body, desire, death and an awareness of transience run through poetry of great formal restraint, whose verbal economy at times approaches the Eastern poetic tradition. «Opus Affettuoso», included here, had received the Portuguese P.E.N. Club Poetry Prize.

Lisbon; Edições &etc; In-8º of 12 (4); pages; Paperback

Work number 1 of the "Contramargem" collection

Facsimile reproduction of the extremely rare first edition of this famous pamphlet by Camilo Castelo Branco, originally printed in Porto, at the Typographia do Ecco, in 1848, without indication of the author's name. Inspired by a matricide that occurred in Lisbon that same year—a daughter accused of killing and dismembering her mother—the narrative was written in the style of chapbook literature, exploring the event through a discourse that is simultaneously dramatic, moralizing, and sensationalist.

One of Camilo's first narrative works and one of his first major publishing successes. The original edition had rapid circulation and successive printings, and today it is extremely rare. This reproduction, part of the "Contramargem" collection, preserves the typographical composition and graphic presentation of the 1848 pamphlet.

Lisbon; Assírio & Alvim; In-8.º of 111(9) pages; Paperback.

First and only standalone edition of this collection of Amerindian poems rendered into Portuguese by Herberto Helder. Published in the same year as «Ouolof» and «Doze Nós numa Corda», it forms part of the group of works which the poet preferred to describe as «poems changed into Portuguese», an expression reflecting his conception of translation as a process of poetic recreation.

It brings together texts from different indigenous traditions of the Americas, connected with mythical, ritual and cosmogonic worlds. These versions occupy a particular place in Herberto Helder's work, in which translation is closely related to his own poetic practice. A work of interest in the context of the reception of non-European poetics in contemporary Portuguese literature.
