An unusual monumental work of 19th-century Portuguese science, written by Júlio de Mattos, a psychiatrist and intellectual, the work brings together the most advanced zoological knowledge of the time, drawing on the works of renowned authors such as Buffon, Brehm, Figuier, and Milne-Edwards. Each volume is richly illustrated with high-quality color chromolithographs, designed by Traviès and printed in Paris by Lamoureaux, giving the collection remarkable artistic and scientific value. The volumes cover a wide range of animal species, combining scientific description with visual appeal. Considered the most beautiful and complete natural history published in Portugal. Copies are bound in solid, full-leather binding with light signs of use. The core has marginal traces of wood-boring on the first and last pages of the first volume. A page was missing from an earlier restoration, and the contents were handwritten during the restoration. Occasional marginal restorations without affecting the text. Overall, these are good copies.

A very rare and valuable work in the field of Portuguese zoology in the 19th century. This is a pioneering study on the ibex (or wild goat) that inhabited the mountainous region of Gerês, in the north of Portugal. The author was one of the most important Portuguese naturalists of the time, describing in detail the morphological characteristics, habits and habitat of this animal, contributing to the knowledge of the Iberian fauna. Illustrated with two engravings. Copy protected in kraft paper, the core is in good condition, with the pages unopened. Only the engravings have some acidity peaks.
