Translated into Spanish language Don Diego Felipe de Albornoz, Canonigo, and Treasurer of the Santa Church of Cartagena. ELÉMENS DE MUSIQUE THÉORIQUE AT PRATIQUE, Suivant Les Principes de M. Rameau
ELÉMENS DE MUSIQUE THÉORIQUE AT PRATIQUE, Suivant Les Principes de M. Rameau

Jean Le Rond D´ Alembert
REF.31942
Year 1766

Lyon; Chez Jean-Marie Bruyset; In-8th of XXXVI 235 (5) pages plus 10 prints; Bound

"Éclarcis, Développés et Simplifiés, Par M. D'Alembernt, de l'Académie Françoise."

Work illustrated with 10 musical stave prints. D'Alembert was exposed to musical theory in 1749, when he was called to revise a memoir submitted to the Academy by Jean-Philippe Rameau. This article, written in collaboration with Diderot, would later form the basis of Rameau's 1750 treatise Demonstration of the Principle of Harmony. D'Alembert wrote a review, praising the author's deductive character as an ideal scientific model. He saw in Rameau's musical theories a support for his own ideas, a fully systematic method with a strongly deductive synthetic structure. Two years later, in 1752, d'Alembert carried out a complete study of Rameau's works in their elements of theoretical and practical music, following the principles of M. Rameau. Emphasizing Rameau's main claim that music was a mathematical science and that it possessed a single principle from which all the elements and rules of musical practice could be deduced, d'Alembert contributed to popularizing the composer's work and publicizing his own theories. He claims to have "clarified, developed and simplified" Rameau's principles, arguing that the idea of a sound body alone was not sufficient to derive the totality of music. Copy with contemporary binding with slight signs of handling, clean core and maintaining the sound of the paper.

Rare first edition of these memoirs, written in Holland, where Wicquefort took refuge. Wicquefort was a diplomat and intellectual, and wrote this work to defend himself against accusations of treason that earned him a life sentence. A famous diplomat, he was arrested for writing about the relations of the young Louis XIV with Mazarin's niece, he found refuge in Holland, where he informed France about the actions of foreign diplomats and massacrers. In 1675 the Williamson Affair arose: Wicquefort was again accused of treason, after having sold secret dispatches to the ambassador of the Crown of England, the knight Williamson. He was arrested on March 25 and in 1676, he was sentenced to life imprisonment after trial and confiscation of his property. It was in prison that he wrote these memoirs about diplomats, ministers, ambassadors and law in Europe. Wicquefort escaped from prison in 1679. He signed this work with the initials L.M.P.
