Published in 1959, the book portrays the city of Lisbon and its people, revealing a hidden Lisbon, simultaneously sad and joyful. For three years, the authors roamed the city's streets, capturing over 6,000 photographs. These images were carefully selected and paired with excerpts from poems by Portuguese authors such as Alexandre O'Neill, Eugénio de Andrade, Jorge de Sena, and José Gomes Ferreira. The result is a pioneering work of contemporary Portuguese photography, which constructs a new vision of the city through a symbiosis between photographic and poetic images. This work is highly sought after internationally and is considered the best Portuguese photography book published to date. Our copy is from the extremely rare special edition of 60 copies on extra-thick 200-gram cardstock, numbered and initialed by the authors. This copy is editorially bound in leather, decorated with gold ironwork on the cover and spine, and is in good condition. Due to the thickness of the paper, this special edition was originally released without a dust jacket.
