Castilho accused them of obscurity and lack of good taste, to which Antero responded with the pamphlet Bom Senso e Bom Gosto, marking the beginning of the dispute. The author argues that the Church has always been against constitutionalism and democracy, and that clericalism represented a threat to the country's modernization. The book also addresses the impact of these measures on the population, which did not always accept the new laws, maintaining its beliefs and traditions despite the restrictions imposed by the republican government. In addition, the work contains unpublished documents on D. Manuel II and the clericalism of the court, in addition to criticisms of Catholic mercantilism and the role of the Jesuits in Portuguese society.
