NOBILIÁRIO DE FAMÍLIAS DE PORTUGAL (33 volumes)
NOBILIÁRIO DE FAMÍLIAS DE PORTUGAL (33 volumes)

Manuel José da Costa Felgueiras Gayo
REF.37007
Year 1938/42
1stEdition

Braga; Agostinho de Azevedo Meirelles and Domingos de Araújo Affonso; Oficinas Gráficas da «Pax»; In-4.º in 33 volumes; Illustrated; Bound.

First printed edition of exceptional importance to Portuguese genealogical studies of the monumental Nobiliário de Famílias de Portugal, by Manuel José da Costa Felgueiras Gayo (1750–1831), one of Portugal's most distinguished genealogists. The result of several decades of research, the work assembles an extraordinary wealth of information concerning the origins, descendants, marriage alliances, hereditary estates, entails and kinship networks of numerous Portuguese families. It remains a fundamental reference for the study of genealogy, nobility and the social history of Portugal.

Published between 1938 and 1942, this edition is a diplomatic transcription of the original manuscript preserved at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Barcelos, retaining the organisation and particular features of Felgueiras Gayo's work. Its publication marked an important event in Portuguese genealogical scholarship, making available a work which, for more than a century, had remained largely accessible only to researchers able to consult the manuscript. The set comprises 28 tomes of the Nobiliário itself, the Título de Souzas, and four tomes of Costados, the latter containing approximately 1,600 annotated genealogical trees connected with the various family lineages.

A rare original edition, strictly limited to 250 numbered copies on Portuguese laid paper, numbered I to X and 1 to 240. The small print run, monumental scale of the publication and frequent dispersal of individual volumes make complete sets particularly desirable. An essential reference for major collections of Portuguese genealogy, widely used in tracing family lineages, establishing ancestry and investigating kinship networks across several centuries.

Copy no. 162 of the limited edition of 250 copies. Complete set of 33 individually bound volumes, in uniform half-leather bindings, with gilt tooling on the spines and gilt fillets on the boards, showing slight signs of handling. Interiors in good condition. Bear the bookplate and ownership signature of a distinguished Portuguese genealogist. The fact that all 33 volumes are individually bound in high-quality matching bindings is a particularly valuable feature, enhancing both the presentation and preservation of the set while maintaining its bibliographical integrity.
