First edition of this important work by Augusto Romano Sanches de Baena e Farinha (1822–1909), later Viscount of Sanches de Baena, devoted to the honorary distinctions granted by the Portuguese Crown during the residence of the royal court in Brazil, between 1808 and 1822. Compiled from the registers of royal grants preserved in the Public Archives of Rio de Janeiro, it records grants of noble status within the Royal Household, appointments of physicians, chamber attendants and doorkeepers, as well as noble titles and appointments to the Royal Council. Dedicated to the bibliographer Inocêncio Francisco da Silva, the work constitutes an important documentary source for the study of nobility, genealogy and Portuguese royal administration in Brazil during the reign of João VI. Referenced in Inocêncio's Dicionário Bibliográfico Português, volume VIII, page 347.

A reprint of the important biography of Father Belchior de Pontes, a Jesuit missionary active in colonial Brazil, originally published in Lisbon by Francisco da Silva in 1752. Written by Father Manoel da Fonseca, also a member of the Society of Jesus, the work provides a valuable account of the Jesuit presence in Brazil, particularly in the São Paulo region, containing information on evangelisation, customs and colonial society, including references to the War of the Emboabas. The original edition was ordered to be confiscated and destroyed by the Royal Censorship Board in 1771, during the Pombaline period, becoming a work of considerable bibliographical rarity. This reprint, issued by Companhia Melhoramentos de São Paulo, includes a foreword by the historian Affonso d'Escragnolle Taunay.

The author examines the various political movements, from the supporters of the 1820 Liberal Revolution and the moderates to the absolutists and ultra-royalists, drawing on historical documents, parliamentary debates and contemporary accounts. The work includes numerous biographical references to nineteenth-century figures and an extensive critical examination of José de Arriaga's História da Revolução de Setembro. Although designated Volume I, it was the only volume published, making it a valuable contribution to the study of constitutional liberalism and nineteenth-century Portuguese political history.
