First printed edition of this important sixteenth-century historical text, written in 1579 by Jerónimo Dias Leite, a canon of Funchal Cathedral, concerning the discovery and settlement of Madeira and Porto Santo, as well as the lives and achievements of the islands' first captains. Preserved in manuscript for centuries, the work was one of the principal sources used by Gaspar Frutuoso in compiling the second book of his Saudades da Terra. Published with an extensive introduction and notes by João Franco Machado, based on a manuscript copy preserved at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, it constitutes a fundamental source for the early history of the Madeira archipelago and Portuguese expansion in the Atlantic.

Important decree dated 23 December 1808, issued by the Council of Regency in the name of Prince Regent João, ordering the enlistment and arming of Lisbon's inhabitants aged between fifteen and sixty to defend the capital against a possible renewed French offensive. The decree provides for the organisation of the population into sixteen legions, stationed at different points throughout the city, with the aim of ensuring military defence, maintaining public order and protecting inhabitants and their property. Signed by D. Miguel Pereira Forjaz, Secretary of State for War and the Navy, it constitutes a significant contemporary record of civilian mobilisation and the defensive measures adopted following the first French invasion. A document of particular interest for the military history of Lisbon and the Peninsular War.

Edict dated 17 September 1808, issued by Lucas de Seabra da Silva, Intendant General of Police of the Court and Kingdom, addressed to the inhabitants of Lisbon following the withdrawal of French troops. The document calls for moderation among the population, condemning acts of revenge, insults and public disorder, and warning that offenders would be arrested and punished under military law. It highlights the presence of British troops and their role in maintaining order during a period of considerable political and social instability. An interesting contemporary printed document concerning the events following the first French invasion, of particular interest for the history of Lisbon, the Peninsular War and Anglo-Portuguese relations.

Rare royal decree dated 15 November 1808, issued by Prince Regent João in recognition of the inhabitants of Olhão, in the Algarve, for their uprising against French occupation, which began on 16 June of that year. The decree raises Olhão to the status of a town, independent of Faro, under the name «Vila do Olhão da Restauração», granting its inhabitants the privileges, honours and exemptions enjoyed by the kingdom's most distinguished towns. It also orders the creation of a commemorative medal bearing the letter O and an inscription celebrating the Restoration and the Prince Regent. An uncommon contemporary printed document of particular interest for the history of the French invasions, popular resistance in the Algarve and the establishment of the municipality of Olhão.

First edition of this interesting work by Crispiniano da Fonseca, devoted to the historical and judicial reconstruction of the assault on the Solar de Carrapatêlo, carried out by the gang of the notorious outlaw José do Telhado in the mid-nineteenth century. Drawing on the original court proceedings, the author describes the circumstances of the crime, those involved and the episodes of violence associated with one of the best-known figures of nineteenth-century Portuguese banditry.

The work also provides biographical information on José do Telhado, references to his activities and successors, together with historical, ethnographic and archaeological notes concerning several localities in northern Portugal. Illustrated throughout with drawings and photographic reproductions, it offers an interesting contribution to the study of crime, justice and Portuguese regional history in the nineteenth century.

The only published volume of this work from the «Subsídios para a Investigação Histórica em Portugal» series, issued by the National Library of Portugal under the direction of Ataíde e Melo, compiled by Romualda Rodrigues, with a preface by A. Botelho da Costa Veiga. It contains an analytical inventory of documents from the first three bundles of the Archives of the Ecclesiastical Chamber of Lisbon, relating to the de genere inquiries required of candidates seeking admission to the clergy. Although originally intended as a multi-volume work, the project was never continued beyond this first volume.

These inquiries were intended to establish the ancestry, legitimacy and family background of candidates, including information about their origins and those of their ancestors. The work includes an index of personal names facilitating the identification of individuals mentioned in the records, making it an important reference for genealogical research, the history of ecclesiastical institutions and the study of Portuguese society under the Ancien Régime.

Third edition, complete in five volumes, of this important work by Júlio de Castilho (1840–1919), one of the founders of Lisbon historical studies, devoted to the history of the Bairro Alto district. Originally published in 1879 as a single volume, it was considerably expanded in the second edition of 1902–1904. The present edition, edited, revised and annotated by Gustavo de Matos Sequeira (1880–1962), incorporates additional documentary evidence, clarifications and corrections based on subsequent research.

First edition of this memoir by Jorge de Seabra, bringing together chronicles originally published in the newspaper Beira Baixa, from Castelo Branco, between March 1940 and April 1947. The author recalls student life in Coimbra between 1913 and 1918, describing academic traditions, student residences known as repúblicas, literary and social gatherings, graduation theatrical performances and episodes of everyday university life, as well as various personalities associated with the academic community.

A work of interest for the history of the University of Coimbra and its academic customs during the early twentieth century. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates and a cover designed by José de Seabra, the author's brother.

An interesting document issued by the General Police Intendancy, dated 14 July 1810, establishing regulations for the supervision of passengers travelling along the River Tagus to Lisbon and other river ports. It designates authorised landing places, prohibits the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers outside these locations, and requires boatmasters to verify passengers' passports, with special provisions concerning military personnel. Issued during the Peninsular War, it provides valuable evidence of the regulation of movement and police surveillance of the capital's river communications. The text was also reproduced in contemporary collections of Portuguese legislation.

Of particular interest to the history of Portuguese policing during the Peninsular War, it reflects official concerns over the security of the capital during a period of political and military instability. The royal order was communicated by João António Salter de Mendonça to Lucas de Seabra da Silva, Intendant General of Police.

An important royal printed decree, dated 28 December 1808, concerning the formation of two military regiments, one of Infantry and the other of Cavalry, composed of merchants and traders from Lisbon, under the designation Voluntários Reaes do Commercio (Royal Volunteers of Commerce). The initiative originated with the city's commercial community, whose members proposed to organise and finance these military units themselves, for the garrisoning, policing and defence of the capital. The document expresses royal appreciation for their patriotism and refers to the organisational plan and conditions submitted by D. Miguel Pereira Forjaz, responsible for the War and Navy departments.

Of particular interest to Portuguese military and economic history during the Peninsular War, this document records the mobilisation of Lisbon's merchant community following the first French invasion. The organisation of these regiments illustrates the direct participation of commercial corporations in the defence of the Kingdom and the cooperation between royal authorities and the capital's merchants during a period of considerable political and military instability.

An important study by Pedro Romano Rocha (1926–2006), devoted to the history and distinctive characteristics of the medieval liturgy of Braga. Originally presented as a doctoral thesis at the Institut Supérieur de Liturgie in Paris in 1976, the work examines the development of the Braga rite, its connections with Hispanic and European liturgical traditions, and the evolution of the Divine Office within the archdiocese. Particular attention is given to the medieval manuscript known as the «Breviary of Soeiro», a fundamental source for the study of Braga's liturgical tradition, examined from historical, textual and musical perspectives.

With a preface by Pierre-Marie Gy, the book forms volume XV of the «Cultura Medieval e Moderna» series, published by the Portuguese Cultural Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Written in French, with Latin liturgical texts and documentary transcriptions, it is an essential reference for the religious history of Braga and the study of medieval Portuguese liturgy.
