Lisbon; Royal Printing Office; In-8º of 60 pages; Paperback

Rare pamphlet of Miguelist political propaganda and doctrine, published during the Portuguese Civil War, in which the Benedictine Father Matheus da Assumpção Brandão seeks to justify the legitimacy of the acclamation of D. Miguel I and defend his rights to the Crown against the arguments of the supporters of D. Pedro and D. Maria II.

The work is part of the intense political and legal controversy surrounding the succession to the Portuguese throne, constituting an interesting document for the study of Miguelism, the dynastic question, and the ideological confrontation between absolutists and liberals.

"...with the Most Serene Maria Sophia Izabel de Babiera, Monarchs of Portugal. The grandeurs are recounted, the entries are narrated. The festivities that will be celebrated in the distinguished City and Court of Lisbon, from August 11 to October 25, 1687, are referred to. The Descriptions. Dedicated to Sir Jeronimo Nunes da Costa." RARE FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this narrative in verse that describes the festivities - including illuminations, triumphal arches, bonfires and bullfights - celebrated in Lisbon on the occasion of the wedding of D. Pedro II (1648-1706) with Maria Sofia Isabel (1666-1699), daughter of Philip William of Neuburg, Count Palatine. In the prologue, the author observes that the royal nuptials can best be described by a poem rather than by a prose narrative: "I know well that the excellences of these Nuptial Regions Praises, were more Subject for the eloquence of a Poem, than Matter for the limitations of a Report." The 92 branches present extensive poetic descriptions of Maria Sofia's arrival in Lisbon, of a day of bullfighting (pp. 159–252), of a fireworks display (pp. 253–290) and of a second day of bullfighting (pp. 291–328). Each section of the poem is preceded by a few italicized lines explaining the upcoming "scene", often giving details of the actors, scenery, costumes and gold and silver ornaments. For example: "In the midst of this siege, a beautiful fortress stood with four superb bastions and eight impressive sentry boxes, crowned by an imminent castle; many giant sailors armed with lances and rodellas could be seen around the waters, from which violent fires were hidden" (p. 260). The charming title page incorporates the combined arms of D. Pedro II and his wife, surmounted by a large crown. From the crown extend a dragon and a large bird holding crowns over the women who flank their arms. On the left, "Galiope" (sic, for Calliope, muse of epic poetry) is crowned with a globe and a cross bearing the name of Mary, and holds a trumpet in her right hand. On the right is Talia (Talia, muse of comedy), crowned with a globe bearing the name of Pedro, and holding a stringed instrument. Above the arms and the muses, two putti hold three banners with part of the title. The end of the author's prologue explains the use of these two figures: "In the severity of Reays, the Epithalamios do not lose their festive condition; in this one that I present to you, I adorn the serious one with the finery of the joyful one; valhome of the heroic one of CALIOPE, without despising the pleasant one of TALIA: with the Clarion of that one, I specify the greatness; with the Plectrum of this one, I solemnize the festivities" D. Pedro II of Portugal (1648-1706) was the second surviving son of D. João IV. From 1668 onwards, she was regent for her elder brother, D. Afonso VI, who was mentally disabled, whom she exiled to the Azores and later to Sintra, where Afonso died in 1683. Afonso's marriage to Maria Francisca of Savoy had been annulled as it had never been consummated. D. Pedro married his former sister-in-law in 1668, and bore her a daughter, Isabel Luisa Josefa of Portugal, who became heir to the throne. The combination of D. Isabel's poor health and the strict rules of succession to the Portuguese throne led to the cancellation of engagements with royal descendants throughout Europe, which earned her the nickname "the Ever-Bride". When Maria Francisca died in 1683, D. Pedro intended to secure the succession by marrying a woman from a notoriously fertile and well-connected family. He sent Manuel da Silva Teles to Heidelberg to ask for the hand of Maria Sofia, daughter of the Count Palatinate, sister of Leonor Madalena, Leopold's third wife. Copy with contemporary binding in full leather, decorated with gold edges, with slight damage typical of handling. Core with traces of woodpeckers (two or three holes, depending on the pages) maintaining the sonority of the paper.

COMEMORAÇÕES DO V CENTENÁRIO DA MORTE DO INFANTE D. HENRIQUE

REF.21179
Year 1961/63
Lisbon; Graphic Workshops of Neogravura, Lda .; In-4th of 4 volumes; Brooch

“The commemorations of the 5th Centenary of the Death of Infante D. Henrique were exceptionally important, exceeding all forecasts and constituting, without a doubt, a singular event in the fastidiousness of national life. The report, as if it were a presence through the ages of most commemorative ceremonies, held in all quarters of the Portuguese Land, both in the Metropolis and overseas, and in many foreign countries, would be lost in the dispersion and transience of the journalistic news, collecting to the archives, if a work like the one that at this moment does not appear in the light of publicity was edited. Without it, anyone wishing, in the future, to assess the magnitude and significance of the aforementioned celebrations would be obliged to make an exhaustive effort, of uncertain success, in libraries and archives, as, indeed, the experience of analogous events demonstrates. Therefore, the Executive Committee of the Henriquin Commemorations decided to organize this summary history of the events that took place during the centenary year, certain that, thus, future historians or simply curious people will see their work very easily (...) HISTORIA GENEALOGICA DA CASA REAL PORTUGUEZA
HISTORIA GENEALOGICA DA CASA REAL PORTUGUEZA

D. António Caetano de Sousa
REF.35541
Year 1735/48
1stEdition

Lisbon; Joseph Antonio da Sylva's Workshop; In-4º of 20 volumes; Illustrated; Hardcover

A very rare original edition of this monumental work of Portuguese historiography. It is an extensive genealogical and historical compendium that documents, with rigor and erudition, the lineage of the Portuguese monarchy from the founding of the Kingdom to the first half of the 18th century. This first edition was printed in Lisbon, at the Joseph Antonio da Sylva Workshop, and is divided into 13 volumes in 14 volumes (the last divided into two parts), 6 supplementary volumes of "PROOFS OF THE GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF THE PORTUGUESE ROYAL HOUSE," documentary evidence extracted from archives such as the Torre do Tombo and the House of Bragança, and a final volume with the "GENERAL INDEX OF APPELLATIONS, PROPER NAMES." D. António Caetano de Sousa, a Theatine cleric and founding member of the Royal Academy of Portuguese History, dedicated decades to genealogical and historical research, relying on the direct support of King John V, who granted him an annual pension so he could hire a secretary and access rare and scattered sources. The work is not limited to a simple enumeration of names and dates: it traces family relationships, describes political and social contexts, and reveals the behind-the-scenes details of the dynastic alliances that shaped the country's destiny. Genealogy is used as a guiding thread to explore the evolution of the House of Braganza, its connections with other European noble houses, and the impact of these relationships on the power structure in Portugal. Printed on high-quality linen paper, with refined typography and two-color title pages, the printer began as head of the Royal Academy of History and, in 1739, began serving the Portuguese Royal Household, giving rise to the future National Press. The first volumes are richly decorated with vignettes, historical capitals, coats of arms, and royal portraits, engraved by artists such as Simmon and Debrie. Notable illustrations include the allegory of the Lusitanian Monarchy (Vieira Lusitano e Rochefort), the author's portrait, and symbolic and historical scenes. Volume IV includes engravings of Portuguese royal seals, coins, and medals, creating a visually impressive collection of great documentary value. These copies are newly bound with leather spines and corners, and are in good overall condition. The pages are trimmed throughout, with the top margin slightly shortened from the others, but very clean and retaining the sound of the thick paper. The title page has slight, old restorations. The front cover bears an early ownership signature (1744) and a more recent stamp/signature. These are excellent copies.
