Inaugural dissertation presented to the Medical-Surgical School of Porto.

An interesting and unusual medical dissertation dedicated to physical education as an instrument for strengthening the Brazilian population. The author criticizes the predominance of intellectual activity over physical activity and defends a rational and methodical physical education, placing the work within the nineteenth-century debate on the so-called "physiological decline of the race," particularly intensified in Portugal after the British Ultimatum of 1890.

Carlos Alberto de Lima (1866–) completed his studies at the Medical-Surgical School of Porto precisely with the defense of this dissertation, on October 9, 1891, subsequently pursuing a teaching career at the same institution, where he was a professor of Anatomy, Operative Medicine, and External Pathology.

José António d’Anciães Proença was associated with the Porto Medical-Surgical School, where he had already presented, in 1873, a work on acute gonorrhea of the male urethra; later documentation records him as Surgeon-Major of the Army.

A rare work of interest to the history of medicine, surgery, and medical education in Porto in the nineteenth century.

A rare work of great interest to the history of medicine and surgical practices of the 18th century. This copy has contemporary binding with signs of handling, clean interior, and retains the original sound of the paper. It has an owner's signature on the title page. It is worth noting that most copies on the market have only 282 pages, with the remainder referring to the "Treatise on Fracture Operations" found in our copy.
