OS MELHORES CONTOS DE MARQUÊS DE SADE
OS MELHORES CONTOS DE MARQUÊS DE SADE

João Costa
REF.16481
Year 1975

Lisbon; Arcádia; In-8.º of 234(6) pages; Paperback.

Anthology devoted to the short fiction of the Marquis de Sade, bringing together a selection of stories in which the author explores some of the characteristic themes of his work: the transgression of moral and social conventions, desire, cruelty, irony, and the interplay of chance and fate. Beyond their erotic dimension, these texts reveal Sade's satirical side and his criticism of the behaviour and values of contemporary society.

Introduction, selection and translation by João Costa. Published by Arcádia, this edition contributed to the dissemination of Sade's fiction in Portugal, presenting an aspect of the author distinct from his longer and better-known libertine novels.

TRABALHOS DO OLHAR
TRABALHOS DO OLHAR

Al Berto
REF.7371
Year 1982

Lisbon; Contexto Editora; In-8.º of 78 pages; Paperback.

Expanded edition of one of the fundamental works from the first phase of Al Berto's poetry. The original edition, issued in a very limited circulation, had been published by the author in Sines earlier that same year; this Contexto edition substantially enlarged the collection and marked the poet's entry into a wider publishing circuit.

A work centred on the gaze, memory and the relationship between writing and image, permeated by a strong corporeal and homoerotic dimension. Photography, desire, solitude, landscape and urban experience emerge through fragmentary and intensely sensory writing, already revealing several elements that would become characteristic of Al Berto's poetry. A particularly significant title in the development of his work, later incorporated into «O Medo».

Lisbon; &etc / Contramargem; In-8.º of 21(1) pages; Illustrated; Paperback.

Facsimile reproduction of «O Bispo de Beja», an anticlerical and satirical pamphlet published under the pseudonym Homem-Pessoa. The text belongs to the intense controversy surrounding the so-called «Bishop of Beja affair», an episode that attracted considerable public attention during the final years of the Portuguese Monarchy and the early Republic, a period marked by conflict between republican sectors and the Catholic Church.

Fifth volume in &etc's «Contramargem» series, devoted to recovering rare, marginal and ephemeral texts. An interesting document for the study of Portuguese pamphlet literature, political and religious satire, and early 20th-century anticlericalism.

Facsimile reproduction of two rare satirical texts by Guerra Junqueiro, brought together under the title «A Torre de Babel ou A Porra do Soriano», followed by «As Musas». Written in the irreverent and polemical vein characteristic of part of the poet's youthful production, these texts employ parody, sarcasm and literary satire, constituting curious documents from the early years of his literary activity.

Second volume in &etc's «Contramargem» series, devoted to the facsimile recovery of rare, marginal or very limited-circulation Portuguese texts. An edition reproducing the typographical presentation of the original texts and of particular interest for the bibliography of Guerra Junqueiro.

MARIA! Não me mates, que sou tua mãe!

Camilo Castelo Branco
REF.7846
Year 1979

Lisbon; Edições &etc; In-8º of 12 (4); pages; Paperback

Work number 1 of the "Contramargem" collection

Facsimile reproduction of the extremely rare first edition of this famous pamphlet by Camilo Castelo Branco, originally printed in Porto, at the Typographia do Ecco, in 1848, without indication of the author's name. Inspired by a matricide that occurred in Lisbon that same year—a daughter accused of killing and dismembering her mother—the narrative was written in the style of chapbook literature, exploring the event through a discourse that is simultaneously dramatic, moralizing, and sensationalist.

One of Camilo's first narrative works and one of his first major publishing successes. The original edition had rapid circulation and successive printings, and today it is extremely rare. This reproduction, part of the "Contramargem" collection, preserves the typographical composition and graphic presentation of the 1848 pamphlet.

First edition of this critical study devoted to the poetry of Herberto Helder, published as no. 8 in the «Margens do Texto» series. Maria Estela Guedes examines the poet's work with particular attention to its symbolic language and processes of transformation, exploring themes such as the body, matter, alchemy, eroticism, death and poetic creation.

Published at a relatively early stage in the critical reception of Herberto Helder, it constitutes one of the first monographic studies entirely devoted to his work and remains a reference in Helderian critical bibliography.

POEMAS AMERÍNDIOS

Herberto Helder
REF.1509
Year 1997
1stEdition

Lisbon; Assírio & Alvim; In-8.º of 111(9) pages; Paperback.

First and only standalone edition of this collection of Amerindian poems rendered into Portuguese by Herberto Helder. Published in the same year as «Ouolof» and «Doze Nós numa Corda», it forms part of the group of works which the poet preferred to describe as «poems changed into Portuguese», an expression reflecting his conception of translation as a process of poetic recreation.

It brings together texts from different indigenous traditions of the Americas, connected with mythical, ritual and cosmogonic worlds. These versions occupy a particular place in Herberto Helder's work, in which translation is closely related to his own poetic practice. A work of interest in the context of the reception of non-European poetics in contemporary Portuguese literature.

Copy with slight foxing on the first and last leaves, otherwise in overall good condition. With ownership signature.

1stEdition

Lisbon; Assírio & Alvim; In-8.º of 568(8) pages; Paperback.

First edition of this configuration of «Ou o Poema Contínuo», published in 2004 and distinct from the 2001 «Súmula». Herberto Helder brings together here, in a form extensively revised and reorganised by the author himself, a significant part of his previous poetic work. The continuous revision, suppression and rearrangement of texts is a fundamental characteristic of the poet's publishing history and of his conception of his work as a poem in constant transformation.

A volume of particular importance in Herberto Helder's bibliography, representative of the way in which the poet successively reformulated and established his own body of work.

Natália Correia
REF.36768
Year 1946
1stEdition

Lisbon; Edição da Casa do Livro; In-8.º of 298(2) pages; Paperback.

First edition of Natália Correia's first novel and one of her earliest literary works, published when the author was only 23 years old. Appearing at the beginning of her career, «Anoiteceu no Bairro» predates Correia's later prominence particularly as a poet, playwright and essayist, and consequently occupies a distinctive place in her bibliography.

A novel with a strong social dimension, centred on a working-class urban neighbourhood and its inhabitants, showing affinities with the Portuguese Neo-Realist literary environment of the period, while already displaying characteristics of the author's own writing. Recent studies have also highlighted the use of techniques resembling dramatic discourse in its narrative construction. Long difficult to obtain, the work was not reissued until 2004.

A novel left in an unfinished state by the author, it develops the tragic relationship between Vítor and Genoveva and anticipates themes and situations that Eça would later revisit in «Os Maias», making it an important document for the study of the development of his fiction.

The text was established and annotated by João Medina and A. Campos Matos, with an extensive preface by João Medina discussing the history of the manuscript and the editorial criteria adopted. The first publication of one of Eça de Queiroz's most significant previously unpublished works.

Work from the "Poetry of Our Time" collection.

One of the most emblematic works of Portuguese poetry resisting the Estado Novo regime, bringing together poems marked by denunciation of the dictatorship, the Colonial War, emigration and exile, but also by hope for a free homeland. Several of its poems were set to music and widely disseminated, notably by Adriano Correia de Oliveira.

This 1970 edition had a particularly turbulent circulation: there is PIDE documentation relating to the seizure of copies of *O Canto e as Armas* at the Ulmeiro Bookstore in December of that year.

António Gonçalves Rodrigues
REF.35655
Year 1956
1stEdition

Coimbra; Coimbra Editora, limitada; In-8º de 121(3) CXXX(4) pages; Paperback

A work by António Gonçalves Rodrigues, written as a critical response to Aquilino Ribeiro's attack on his doctoral thesis on the Knight of Oliveira. The book emerges after Aquilino Ribeiro published a text in which he harshly criticizes Gonçalves Rodrigues' work, accusing him of plagiarism and misappropriation of ideas. In defense of his work O Protestante Lusitano, Gonçalves Rodrigues writes this book as a kind of personal and academic manifesto, where he refutes point by point the accusations made by Aquilino. The work has a combative and direct tone, revealing the intellectual clash between two scholars of the figure of the Knight of Oliveira, a Portuguese thinker of the 18th century. Gonçalves Rodrigues argues that his thesis was approved by a university jury and that Aquilino's criticisms are unfounded, based on forced parallels and biased interpretations. Includes appendices and notes that reinforce the author's position. It is a curious piece of Portuguese literary history, not only for its content, but also for the context of rivalry between two intellectuals who disputed the interpretation of a significant historical figure. Copy with slight signs of handling on the paperback covers, interior in good overall condition, pages preserved without being opened.
