Ana de Castro Osório
REF.36824
Year 1908
1stEdition

Belo Horizonte; In-8.º of 24 pages; Paperback.

Rare Brazilian edition, printed in Belo Horizonte in September 1908, associated with the earliest circulation in Brazil of one of Anna de Castro Osorio's historical and educational texts. The author (1872-1935), a writer, educator, publisher and prominent figure in the Portuguese feminist and republican movements, played an important role in children's literature, regarding books for young readers as having an educational, civic and literary purpose.

This small publication precedes the Portuguese edition of «Uma Lição de Historia», published in 1909 and illustrated by Raquel Gameiro and Hebe Gonçalves. The work was approved by the Conselho Superior de Instrucção Publica of the State of Minas Gerais at its meeting of 10 October 1908, which considered it suitable reading for children, and it was subsequently intended for school reading and prizes. A particularly interesting document for the study of the reception of Anna de Castro Osorio's work in Brazil and of Portuguese-Brazilian educational and cultural relations in the early 20th century.

Lisbon; Livros Horizonte; In-8.º of 116(4) pages; Paperback.

First edition of this poetry collection by José Manuel Mendes, published as no. 23 of the «Horizonte de Poesia» series. «Limiar da Terra» represents a significant stage in the development of the author's poetry, marking a gradual departure from the more directly socially engaged expression of his earlier books and a greater refinement of poetic language, without abandoning its relationship with history, memory and human reality.

Landscape and the earth emerge as both physical and symbolic spaces, in a poetry in which attention to language and the construction of imagery assumes particular importance. An important work in José Manuel Mendes's poetic career, later included in his anthology «Rosto Descontínuo 1963-1986».

Al Berto
REF.7371
Year 1982

Lisbon; Contexto Editora; In-8.º of 78 pages; Paperback.

Expanded edition of one of the fundamental works from the first phase of Al Berto's poetry. The original edition, issued in a very limited circulation, had been published by the author in Sines earlier that same year; this Contexto edition substantially enlarged the collection and marked the poet's entry into a wider publishing circuit.

A work centred on the gaze, memory and the relationship between writing and image, permeated by a strong corporeal and homoerotic dimension. Photography, desire, solitude, landscape and urban experience emerge through fragmentary and intensely sensory writing, already revealing several elements that would become characteristic of Al Berto's poetry. A particularly significant title in the development of his work, later incorporated into «O Medo».

Camilo Castelo Branco
REF.7846
Year 1979

Lisbon; Edições &etc; In-8º of 12 (4); pages; Paperback

Work number 1 of the "Contramargem" collection

Facsimile reproduction of the extremely rare first edition of this famous pamphlet by Camilo Castelo Branco, originally printed in Porto, at the Typographia do Ecco, in 1848, without indication of the author's name. Inspired by a matricide that occurred in Lisbon that same year—a daughter accused of killing and dismembering her mother—the narrative was written in the style of chapbook literature, exploring the event through a discourse that is simultaneously dramatic, moralizing, and sensationalist.

One of Camilo's first narrative works and one of his first major publishing successes. The original edition had rapid circulation and successive printings, and today it is extremely rare. This reproduction, part of the "Contramargem" collection, preserves the typographical composition and graphic presentation of the 1848 pamphlet.

REF.1509
Year 1997
1stEdition

Lisbon; Assírio & Alvim; In-8.º of 111(9) pages; Paperback.

First and only standalone edition of this collection of Amerindian poems rendered into Portuguese by Herberto Helder. Published in the same year as «Ouolof» and «Doze Nós numa Corda», it forms part of the group of works which the poet preferred to describe as «poems changed into Portuguese», an expression reflecting his conception of translation as a process of poetic recreation.

It brings together texts from different indigenous traditions of the Americas, connected with mythical, ritual and cosmogonic worlds. These versions occupy a particular place in Herberto Helder's work, in which translation is closely related to his own poetic practice. A work of interest in the context of the reception of non-European poetics in contemporary Portuguese literature.
