A detailed historical account of the military campaign led by Dom Pedro, Duke of Braganza, during the Portuguese Civil War. D. ANTONIO CAETANO DE SOUSA. A sua vida, a sua obra e a sua família

Affonso de Ornellas
REF.36893
Year 1918

Lisbon; Tipografia da Casa Portuguesa; In-4.º of (4), 156 pages and 40 leaves of plates outside the text; Illustrated; Bound.

An important biographical, historical and genealogical study devoted to D. António Caetano de Sousa (1674–1759), a Theatine cleric, historian and one of Portugal's most distinguished eighteenth-century genealogists. Written by Affonso de Dornellas, a respected scholar of heraldry and genealogy, the work examines the subject's family ancestry, life and intellectual achievements, emphasising his fundamental contribution to Portuguese historiography.

Particular attention is devoted to the monumental «História Genealógica da Casa Real Portuguesa», a scholarly undertaking of exceptional importance for the study of Portuguese royal lineages and nobility, produced during the reign of King João V. The study also places D. António Caetano de Sousa's intellectual activity within the scholarly environment of the first half of the eighteenth century, characterised by the development of historical and documentary research.

Extensively illustrated with photographic reproductions, portraits, facsimiles of historical documents, manuscripts and heraldic material, including 40 separate leaves of plates. An offprint from volume VI of «História e Genealogia», a periodical edited by Affonso de Dornellas himself. An edition of 500 copies, of particular interest for the history of Portuguese historiography and genealogical and nobiliary studies.

Copy with a sturdy half-leather binding in good condition, with fluorescent highlighter underlining on two pages of the text. Bears a bookplate and an ownership signature. Enhanced by a presentation inscription from the author.

HISTORIA DA INDEPENDENCIA DA PROVINCIA DO MARANHÃO (1822–1828)
HISTORIA DA INDEPENDENCIA DA PROVINCIA DO MARANHÃO (1822–1828)

Luiz Antonio Vieira da Silva
REF.36886
Year 1862
1stEdition

Maranhão; Typographia do Progresso, de B. de Mattos & A.; In-8.º of XI, 349, 52 pages; Bound.

Rare first edition of one of the most important nineteenth-century works devoted to Brazilian independence in the province of Maranhão, written by Luiz Antonio Vieira da Silva (1828–1889), later Viscount of Vieira da Silva. Published approximately four decades after the events it describes, it is a particularly valuable source for the study of the complex political relations between Portugal and Brazil during Brazilian emancipation. Covering the years 1822 to 1828, the work examines Maranhão's resistance to separation from Portugal, the military and political conflicts preceding the province's incorporation into the Brazilian Empire in July 1823, and the subsequent unrest. The volume includes an important collection of historical documents occupying the final 52 pages, considerably enhancing its research value. Its bibliographical importance is acknowledged in specialised reference works, including Rubens Borba de Moraes's Bibliographia Brasiliana and the catalogue of works on Brazilian independence held by the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute.

Copy with a modest later half-leather binding showing signs of handling. Staining to the upper part of the text block near the spine and traces of dampness on the final five leaves; the remainder of the text block is in good condition. Traces of woodworm on the opening pages near the spine. It has a signature and a bookplate proving ownership.
