OS JESUITAS PORTUGUESES NA AFRICA ORIENTAL. 1560 a 1759 — 1890 a 1910

Francisco Rodrigues
REF.36905
Year 1927

Porto; Tipografia Porto Médico, L.da; In-8.º of 16 pages; Illustrated; Paperback.

A historical study by the Jesuit priest Francisco Rodrigues (1873–1956), a distinguished historian of the Society of Jesus in Portugal, devoted to the presence and activities of Portuguese missionaries in East Africa, particularly Mozambique. It examines two major periods: the first phase of missionary expansion, beginning in the sixteenth century and interrupted by the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, and the revival of their activities in the late nineteenth century, continuing until the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910. A work of interest for the history of Catholic missions, the Portuguese presence in Mozambique and the relationship between the Society of Jesus and colonial administration, placing the missionaries' religious, educational and cultural activities within their African historical context.

Duarte Leite
REF.36089
Year 1941

Lisbon; Bertrand Bookstore; In-8º of 269(3) pages; Hardcover.

Important critical study by Duarte Leite devoted to Gomes Eanes de Zurara's «Chronicle of the Deeds of Guinea», one of the fundamental sources for the history of the early Portuguese discoveries along the West African coast. The author critically examines the composition, chronology and sources of the Chronicle, discussing various questions concerning its writing and textual transmission. Duarte Leite's study became an important reference in the historiographical debate surrounding Zurara's work.

Particularly relevant to the study of the historiography of the Portuguese Discoveries and Prince Henry the Navigator, the work also addresses questions such as the dating of the Chronicle and the so-called secrecy surrounding Portuguese discoveries. Duarte Leite's theses prompted debate among contemporary historians, notably Álvaro Júlio da Costa Pimpão, and the work remains widely cited in specialist bibliography.
