AS FAMOSAS ARMADAS PORTUGUESAS. 1496–1650

Simão Ferreira Paes
REF.36891
Year 1937

Rio de Janeiro; Ministério da Marinha; In-4.º of 261(1) pages; Illustrated; Bound.

An important documentary work on the history of Portuguese maritime discoveries and overseas expansion, reproducing the seventeenth-century manuscript by Simão Ferreira Paes, a nobleman of the Portuguese Royal Household and a member of the Holy Office. It records the Portuguese fleets dispatched to India between the late fifteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries, identifying ships, captains, governors, viceroys, fleet commanders and admirals, together with significant events during their voyages. A valuable source for the study of the India Run, Portuguese naval organisation and Eastern trade routes, particularly significant for preserving information from a period whose historical records suffered considerable losses in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The original manuscript, preserved in the Brazilian Naval Archives, was inscribed in 2011 on UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme national register in Brazil.

Copy with a sturdy half-leather binding in good condition. Retains the original paperback cover, showing staining and slight handling damage. Traces of woodworm in the opening pages, without affecting the legibility of the text. Text block in good condition. Bears an ownership signature and bookplate.

Duarte Leite
REF.36089
Year 1941

Lisbon; Bertrand Bookstore; In-8º of 269(3) pages; Hardcover.

Important critical study by Duarte Leite devoted to Gomes Eanes de Zurara's «Chronicle of the Deeds of Guinea», one of the fundamental sources for the history of the early Portuguese discoveries along the West African coast. The author critically examines the composition, chronology and sources of the Chronicle, discussing various questions concerning its writing and textual transmission. Duarte Leite's study became an important reference in the historiographical debate surrounding Zurara's work.

Particularly relevant to the study of the historiography of the Portuguese Discoveries and Prince Henry the Navigator, the work also addresses questions such as the dating of the Chronicle and the so-called secrecy surrounding Portuguese discoveries. Duarte Leite's theses prompted debate among contemporary historians, notably Álvaro Júlio da Costa Pimpão, and the work remains widely cited in specialist bibliography.
