Rattazzi, Princesse
REF.36503
Year s 1879

Paris; A. Degorce-Cadot éditeur; In-8º of XIX(1)415(1) pages; Hardcover

First edition of one of the most controversial travelogues about Portugal published in the 19th century. It brings together the author's impressions, after her two visits to Portugal in 1876 and 1879, about the country, its customs, society, politics and figures of the time, drawing a portrait that is at once critical, biting and marked by a foreign perspective. The work provoked strong controversy in Portugal, giving rise to the famous "Rattazzi Question", in which Camilo Castelo Branco responded with the pamphlet A Senhora Rattazzi, harshly refuting the author's assessments. Copy with half-English binding, in good general condition. Two sheets from Ilustração Portuguesa relating to the work have been added before the frontispiece.

1stEdition

Paris; Belin-Leprieur et Morizot éditeurs; In-4º of XII 556 pages; Illustrated; Hardcover

An unusual illustrated travel book, typical of 19th-century European Romanticism, which brings together the impressions of a foreign traveler as he journeyed through Spain and Portugal. The work combines literary description, ethnographic observation, and artistic interest, presenting landscapes, monuments, popular customs, and scenes of daily life with a simultaneously curious and idealized gaze. The engravings—a central element of the book—seek to capture the "picturesque" diversity of the Iberian Peninsula, from historic cities and ancient ruins to villages, regional costumes, and local festivities. Some of the engravings are colored. Copy with solid binding with slight signs of handling, interior in good condition.

1stEdition

Lisbon; At the Academy Printing House; In-8º of (4) VIII 446 pages; Bound

Rare first Portuguese edition, and among the first printed versions of the famous travels of Ibn Battuta — or Ben-Batuta — the great Arab traveler born in Tangier in 1304. Over about four decades, Ibn Battuta traveled an impressive distance, estimated at about 120,000 kilometers, becoming one of the most extraordinary figures in the travel literature of the Islamic world. His adventure began with a pilgrimage to Mecca, but quickly turned into a long exploration that took him through vast regions: Egypt, Syria, territories of the former Byzantine Empire, Tartary, Persia, India and China. He also visited Andalusia, later returning to North Africa. In 1354 he settled in Fez, where he spent his last years dictating the account of his travels to the royal secretary Ibn Juzayy. For a long time, only small excerpts of his work were known, based on a manuscript preserved in the library of Gotha. Only in 1829 did Samuel Lee publish a more extensive translation, using three existing summaries in Cambridge. The first truly complete edition would only appear in 1853, thanks to several manuscripts discovered during the French occupation of Algeria. This edition, in French, was prepared by Charles Defrémery and Beniamino Sanguinetti. According to the Portuguese translator, José de Santo António Moura, the manuscript that served as the basis for his version was acquired in Fez in 1797. This manuscript of his “was copied from another written by Mohammed, Ben Mohammed, Ben Ahamad, Ben Jazi, Alcalbi, Granatense, contemporary and friend of Ibn Battuta, his copyist being the author of the preamble”. bib: Inocêncio, 4, 241; Encyclopedia of Exploration, p. 97 (B47). This work was published in two volumes, of which we only possess the first. The second one would be published in 1855. Copy with kraft paper protection, in good general condition.

Johan Splinter Stavorinus
REF.35369
Year 1798

Paris; Chez H. J. Jansen, Biblioteca Imprimeur; In-8th of VIII 434 (2) pages and 3 prints; Illustrated; Bound

"Chef d´escadre de la République Batave; avec des observations sur la Navigation et le Commerce de ces Contrées, ainsi que sur le Caractère, les Moeurs et la Religion des Peuples qui les habítent. Traduit du Hollandois par H. J. Jansen. Orné de trois cartes." A travelogue written by Johan Splinter Stavorinus, a naval officer of the Batavian Republic, originally published in Dutch and translated into French by Hendrik Jansen in 1798. The work recounts an extensive maritime journey that began in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, passing the Cape of Good Hope, and continuing on to Batavia (present-day Jakarta), Bantam (in Indonesia), and Bengal (in India), between 1768 and 1771. Throughout the book, Stavorinus offers a rich description of the places he visited, addressing cultural, social, and economic aspects of the colonial regions under European rule and the local peoples. He carefully observes customs, religions, clothing, architecture, and trade practices, in addition to recounting significant historical events such as the siege of Chinsura, the famine in the kingdom of Bahar, and the earthquakes in Batavia. The author also describes daily life in the colonies, including details on food, diseases, punishments applied to slaves, and the administrative organization of the Dutch possessions. Illustrated with three fold-out maps that illustrate the voyage route. Written in a typical 18th-century style, the text combines personal observations with reflections on maritime trade, navigation, and colonial policy. The work is considered a valuable source for the study of the European presence in Asia during the modern period and offers a detailed perspective on the colonial world of the 18th century. This copy is bound in contemporary print and is in good overall condition.

REF.35464
Year 1833
1stEdition

London; James Fraser; In-8º of 2 volumes with XIII(1)333(3) and 384 pages; Illustrated; Bound "...under the orders of His Imperial Majesty Dom Pedro, Duke of Braganza." A detailed historical account of the military campaign led by Dom Pedro, Duke of Braganza, during the Portuguese Civil War. The author, a British officer who participated directly in the expedition, describes the events that culminated in the attempt to restore Dona Maria II's rights to the throne, contested by Dom Miguel's absolutist government. The work follows the organization of liberal troops in the Azores, the landing in northern Portugal, the capture of the city of Porto, and the fighting during the ensuing siege. In addition to military strategies and the difficulties faced, Hodges offers observations on the political context, local customs, and the morale of the forces involved. The book is considered a valuable source for understanding the Portuguese Civil War, revealing not only the behind-the-scenes story of the liberal campaign but also a foreign perspective on one of the most turbulent periods in 19th-century Portuguese history. Illustrated with a fold-out map of the country around the city of Porto. Copies in half-English bindings with faint signs of use, the pages in good condition. The map has a 2-cm tear and has been duly restored.
