Karl Marx
REF.36070
Year 1912
1stEdition

Lisbon; Published by Typographia de Francisco Luiz Gonçalves; In-8.º of 240 pages; Softcover.

Rare first Portuguese edition of «Capital» by Karl Marx (1818–1883), one of the fundamental works in the history of economic, political and social thought. The work presents a critical analysis of the capitalist system, addressing the production and circulation of commodities, value, labour, capital accumulation and the economic and social relations characteristic of industrial society.

Published in the «Bibliotheca d'Educação Nacional» series, in a translation by Albano de Moraes, this Portuguese edition is based on the French abridgement prepared by Gabriel Deville, responsible for one of the earliest attempts to make Marx's economic thought accessible to a wider readership. It represents an important testimony to the introduction and circulation of Marxist ideas in Portugal, at a time when socialist literature was beginning to reach a broader audience. A complete translation of «Capital» into European Portuguese would only appear after the Revolution of 25 April 1974. An edition of notable rarity and interest for the history of books, the labour movement and Portuguese political thought.

Anthology devoted to the short fiction of the Marquis de Sade, bringing together a selection of stories in which the author explores some of the characteristic themes of his work: the transgression of moral and social conventions, desire, cruelty, irony, and the interplay of chance and fate. Beyond their erotic dimension, these texts reveal Sade's satirical side and his criticism of the behaviour and values of contemporary society.

Denis Diderot
REF.36800
Year 1975

Lisbon; Arcádia; In-8.º of 219(5) pages; Paperback.

Third edition of this Portuguese translation of «La Religieuse», a novel written by Diderot around 1760 and published posthumously in book form in 1796. The work originated in a literary hoax devised by Diderot and several friends involving the Marquis de Croismare, subsequently developing into one of the author's best-known narratives. Through the memoirs of Suzanne Simonin, a young woman forced by her family to take religious vows against her will, Diderot denounces enforced enclosure, abuses within convent life and the consequences of the repression of individual freedom.

Translated by João Gaspar Simões. A particularly representative work of Diderot's Enlightenment thought, combining criticism of religious institutions, a defence of individual freedom and a penetrating psychological portrayal of its protagonist.

Published in October 1971 in the «Biblioteca Arcádia — Clássicos» series, this first Portuguese translation bears on its cover the description «the accursed book of the accursed poet», evoking both the clandestine character of the original work and the provocative nature of Apollinaire's writing.

Rainer Maria Rilke
REF.36762
Year 1986

Lisbon; Contexto Editora; In-8.º of 54(2) pages; Paperback.

Portuguese edition of «Briefe an einen jungen Dichter», translated by Fernanda de Castro. The work brings together ten letters written by Rilke between 1903 and 1908 to Franz Xaver Kappus, a young military officer aspiring to become a poet, who eventually published them in book form in 1929, after the writer's death.

Far more than advice on literary creation, the letters constitute a reflection on artistic vocation, solitude, love, doubt, inner maturation and the need to find one's own voice. One of Rilke's best-known prose works and a fundamental text for understanding his conception of poetry and the artist's place in the world. Fernanda de Castro's translation also occupies an important place in the Portuguese reception of Rilke, having been the first Portuguese version of these letters, originally published in 1946.

Coimbra; University Press; Volume 8, 194 (8) pages; Illustrated; Bound

Doctoral dissertation presented at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra. Focusing on Germanic Philology, the work proposes an in-depth analysis of the evolution of the ballad, comparing the popular ballad with the German artistic ballad. The author delves into the historical and stylistic origins of this poetic genre, exploring its development, its narrative and lyrical characteristics, and its role in the Germanic literary tradition. Through a philological and critical approach, Sousa Costa highlights the cultural influences that shaped the ballad and its place in European literature, especially in the German context. Year 1853

Porto; Typ. de J. Lourenço de Sousa; In-8º of 4 volumes with 134, 135, 131(1) and 135(1) pages; Bound

Rare Portuguese edition of one of the cornerstones of 19th-century American abolitionist literature. Originally published in 1836 in the United States under the title The Slave: or Memoirs of Archy Moore, this novel by Richard Hildreth preceded Harriet Beecher Stowe's famous book by more than a decade. This Portuguese edition, printed in Lisbon in 1853, took advantage of the contemporary publishing phenomenon of Uncle Tom's Cabin to introduce the Portuguese-speaking public to this raw and realistic narrative. The work narrates, in the first person, the memoirs of Archy Moore, a white man enslaved because he was the son of a mulatto slave and his own aristocratic master. Through this strong dramatic pillar, the author exposes the moral contradictions, violence, and inhumanity of the slave system in the Southern United States, culminating in a daring escape to freedom. Complete copy with its 4 volumes bound in two volumes, with half-English binding with slight signs of handling. Interior with stains at the top of the pages, without affecting the reading of the text.
