REGISTO DA FREGUESIA DE SANTA CRUZ DO CASTELLO DESDE 1536 ATÉ 1628

Edgar Prestage ; Pedro de Azevedo

REF.36888

Year 1913

Coimbra; Imprensa da Universidade; In-4.º of 342(6) pages; Bound.

An important work of historical and genealogical research, forming part of the series «Registos Paroquiais de Lisboa», published with an introduction, notes and index by Edgar Prestage and Pedro d’Azevedo. It brings together transcriptions of the early parish registers of Santa Cruz do Castelo, covering the period from 1536 to 1628, and constitutes a valuable documentary source for the study of Lisbon's population during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Located in the historic district surrounding São Jorge Castle, this parish occupied a particularly interesting position within the urban and social organisation of sixteenth-century Lisbon. The records make it possible to trace family histories, identify kinship relationships and explore aspects of everyday life, religious practices and the social composition of the population. A reference work for genealogical research, historical demography and the social history of Lisbon, especially significant for the early date of the documents transcribed and for its editors' contribution to the dissemination of Portuguese parish records.

Copy with a sturdy synthetic imitation-leather binding, in good overall condition. The final two leaves and the original paperback cover have areas of paper loss; the remainder of the text block is in very good condition. Bears an ownership bookplate and signature.

Coimbra; Imprensa da Universidade; In-folio of 2 volumes comprising 635(1) and 628 pages; Bound.

An important work of historical and genealogical research, published by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences as part of the series «Registos Paroquiais de Lisboa», with introduction, notes and indexes by Edgar Prestage and Pedro d’Azevedo. It brings together transcriptions of the early parish registers of Lisbon Cathedral parish, covering the period from 1563 to 1610, and constitutes a documentary source of exceptional interest for the study of Lisbon's population during the second half of the sixteenth century and the early seventeenth century. These records provide valuable evidence of family life, kinship relationships and the social composition of one of the capital's oldest and most important parishes, offering essential material for genealogical research, historical demography, onomastics and social history. The publication is particularly significant for preserving and making accessible primary sources fundamental to the history of Lisbon during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Copies with sturdy imitation-leather synthetic bindings, in good overall condition. Both bear ownership bookplates and signatures.
