Frei Pancrácio da Lourinhã, the main character, is an imaginary character, created by an anonymous author. The books offer a vivid portrait of Portugal in the 19th century. The author, taking advantage of the fact that he is anonymous, exposes our "Miserable town" in a raw way, not being shy about mentioning real names and tells true and important facts from our history. Everything happens to Friar Pancrácio in a real context, where he reports passions for saints, joining the ranks of the Liberal war, being part of the “moirama”, and being arrested.
