"...with the Most Serene Maria Sophia Izabel de Babiera, Monarchs of Portugal. The grandeurs are recounted, the entries are narrated. The festivities that will be celebrated in the distinguished City and Court of Lisbon, from August 11 to October 25, 1687, are referred to. The Descriptions. Dedicated to Sir Jeronimo Nunes da Costa." RARE FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this narrative in verse that describes the festivities - including illuminations, triumphal arches, bonfires and bullfights - celebrated in Lisbon on the occasion of the wedding of D. Pedro II (1648-1706) with Maria Sofia Isabel (1666-1699), daughter of Philip William of Neuburg, Count Palatine. In the prologue, the author observes that the royal nuptials can best be described by a poem rather than by a prose narrative: "I know well that the excellences of these Nuptial Regions Praises, were more Subject for the eloquence of a Poem, than Matter for the limitations of a Report." The 92 branches present extensive poetic descriptions of Maria Sofia's arrival in Lisbon, of a day of bullfighting (pp. 159–252), of a fireworks display (pp. 253–290) and of a second day of bullfighting (pp. 291–328). Each section of the poem is preceded by a few italicized lines explaining the upcoming "scene", often giving details of the actors, scenery, costumes and gold and silver ornaments. For example: "In the midst of this siege, a beautiful fortress stood with four superb bastions and eight impressive sentry boxes, crowned by an imminent castle; many giant sailors armed with lances and rodellas could be seen around the waters, from which violent fires were hidden" (p. 260). The charming title page incorporates the combined arms of D. Pedro II and his wife, surmounted by a large crown. From the crown extend a dragon and a large bird holding crowns over the women who flank their arms. On the left, "Galiope" (sic, for Calliope, muse of epic poetry) is crowned with a globe and a cross bearing the name of Mary, and holds a trumpet in her right hand. On the right is Talia (Talia, muse of comedy), crowned with a globe bearing the name of Pedro, and holding a stringed instrument. Above the arms and the muses, two putti hold three banners with part of the title. The end of the author's prologue explains the use of these two figures: "In the severity of Reays, the Epithalamios do not lose their festive condition; in this one that I present to you, I adorn the serious one with the finery of the joyful one; valhome of the heroic one of CALIOPE, without despising the pleasant one of TALIA: with the Clarion of that one, I specify the greatness; with the Plectrum of this one, I solemnize the festivities" D. Pedro II of Portugal (1648-1706) was the second surviving son of D. João IV. From 1668 onwards, she was regent for her elder brother, D. Afonso VI, who was mentally disabled, whom she exiled to the Azores and later to Sintra, where Afonso died in 1683. Afonso's marriage to Maria Francisca of Savoy had been annulled as it had never been consummated. D. Pedro married his former sister-in-law in 1668, and bore her a daughter, Isabel Luisa Josefa of Portugal, who became heir to the throne. The combination of D. Isabel's poor health and the strict rules of succession to the Portuguese throne led to the cancellation of engagements with royal descendants throughout Europe, which earned her the nickname "the Ever-Bride". When Maria Francisca died in 1683, D. Pedro intended to secure the succession by marrying a woman from a notoriously fertile and well-connected family. He sent Manuel da Silva Teles to Heidelberg to ask for the hand of Maria Sofia, daughter of the Count Palatinate, sister of Leonor Madalena, Leopold's third wife. Copy with contemporary binding in full leather, decorated with gold edges, with slight damage typical of handling. Core with traces of woodpeckers (two or three holes, depending on the pages) maintaining the sonority of the paper.
