Henry Vignaud, a French scholar from the early 20th century, dedicates himself in them to dismantling the legends accumulated over centuries and to reconstructing, based on rigorous documentation, both the navigator's youth and the genesis of his famous 1492 expedition. In Études critiques sur la vie de Colomb avant ses découvertes, Vignaud focuses on the early phase of Columbus's life, examining his family background, education, first maritime experiences, and his settlement in Portugal. The author demonstrates that much of the traditional biography rests on late, contradictory, or openly fanciful sources. He questions invented genealogies, uncertain birth dates, and episodes that seem to have been created to glorify the figure of the navigator. By re-evaluating documents, testimonies, and chronicles, Vignaud seeks to reconstruct a more plausible Columbus: a man shaped by the mercantile and maritime environment of the Mediterranean, influenced by Portuguese navigation networks, and far from the image of a solitary genius that romantic historiography has attributed to him. In Histoire critique de la grande entreprise de Christophe Colomb, the author shifts the focus to the conception and development of the project that would lead to the Atlantic crossing. Vignaud meticulously analyzes how Columbus presented his plan to the European courts, how he negotiated support, and how the expedition was eventually approved by the Catholic Monarchs. The work challenges the idea that Columbus possessed advanced scientific knowledge or an anticipated vision of the existence of a new continent. On the contrary, Vignaud argues that the project was born from a combination of personal ambition, misinterpretations of geographical sources, and medieval beliefs about the extent of the globe. The expedition, according to him, was less the result of scientific calculation and more the product of political circumstances, religious expectations, and individual persistence.
