BARBOSA MACHADO VOL. III, 309. "Manoel Mendes de Castro born in Lisbon, and son of Francisco Mendes, and Maria de Castro. Learned in the mother country the human letters happened to Salamanca in whose University studied Civil Law in which it received the grao of Bacharel replacing sometimes the Prima Chair of which was Owner Diogo Henriques. Returning to Portugal he joined the University of Coimbra on October 2, 1587, where he was conductive by Provisao on February 13, 1589. In the space of two years he attended in Coimbra, he replaced a few vacant Chairs, especially the three books of the Code, But it has never been Lente Proprietario since it is so named in Repet. Tit. Cod. Of Annon. Civil. Lib. 11. He practiced law in the Court of Madrid, and then in Lisbon in the year 1604. Procurator of the Crown in the House of Appeal. Foy of the celebrated Jurisconsult of his time being such the genius he had for this Faculty that already answered the serious questions, when he had disassociate years of age as he affirma in the Epistola that serves as Prologo ad Relect.
